Timing is Key for Budget-Conscious Travelers

Traveling during the peak summer season is nearly impossible for families on a strict budget.  This is especially true if you are flying to your favorite seasonal vacation destination.  Airlines show no mercy on penny-pinching passengers and traditionally increase already high airfares during the summer months. Fortunately, there are some ways you can save money when taking to the skies in the coming months.  The trick is to remember key dates as set by major commercial carriers.  For example, if you are traveling within the United States, airfares typically dip at the end of August, when airlines decide that summer … Continue reading

Money-Saving Packing Strategies

I took a crash course in efficient packing shortly after I was forced to fork over $100 to United Airlines for failing to keep my bags under 50 pounds. For an extra $150, I could have purchased my bag a seat and let it ride next to me on my flight. I kicked myself for months following that debacle.  It was a costly mistake that should have never happened. With holiday travel peaking in a few days, consider the following packing tips so that you won’t be forced to shell out extra dough on your flight to grandma’s house: Make … Continue reading

Playing the Frequent Flyer Game

Years ago, I enrolled in multiple frequent flyer programs with the hope that I would accrue enough miles to earn free flights.  Nearly two decades later, I’ve scored roughly eight round-trip tickets at no charge thanks solely to miles earned by flying.  Not by staying at select hotels, purchasing meals at participating restaurants, or sending flowers to loved ones using a company affiliated with an airline’s loyalty program. I prefer to earn miles the old-fashioned way: by flying. There has been a growing trend among frequent flyer programs to reward travelers with miles if they patronize companies affiliated with an … Continue reading

Flying in Style with Pet Airways

A new airline is soaring through the clouds… and people aren’t allowed to ride. Pet Airways is a new service flying cats and dogs across the United States. How it all began: you can blame a little dog named Zoe. Zoe belongs to the owners of Pet Airways. Like many pet owners, they found it challenging to arrange travel with Zoe in the family. If they wanted to fly somewhere, Zoe was a little too big to ride under the seat (some airlines allow pets of a certain size to ride in the cabin). But they didn’t want their furry … Continue reading

Saying Farewell to In-Flight Movies

Think back to your last airplane ride. Did you have to pay for the standard airline issued headphones, which enable you to watch the in-flight movie or were they free? Now, how many of you remember a time when there was no in-flight movie? For those of you who raised their hands to the latter you should feel right at home on upcoming US Airways flights. Yes, it’s true; yet another reduction in airline services has been unveiled and this time the 2-hour entertainment block got the ax. According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, US Airways is going to eliminate in-flight … Continue reading

Airlines Raise Rates—AGAIN!

Will it ever end? Don’t hold your breath folks, according to travel analysts, finding affordable summer airfare will be tougher than ever this year. The news is bad and it’s getting worse as six of North America’s largest carriers announced (yet again) that they plan to raise prices for flights on many domestic routes where there’s no non-stop stop competition from low-fare carriers. That means if you are looking to fly non-stop from Chicago to Honolulu or Detroit to Providence your chances of finding decent airfares on American, United, Delta, Northwest, Continental or US Airways are slim to none. According … Continue reading

Say Good Bye to Free Pretzels and Peanuts

Can the airline industry really do anything more to shock us? I’m afraid to ask. And I don’t really need to given US Airways latest announcement. One travel analyst referred to it as the “ultimate cost-cutting move,” yet somehow I am not at all surprised that US Airways has decided to eliminate free snacks in coach class on all its domestic flights. The new rule went into effect on Sunday the same day the carrier matched last week’s fare hikes by United Airlines, American Airlines and Delta Air Lines. The increases are from $10 to $60 per round trip and … Continue reading

Fighting Back—Disgruntled Passenger Sues Airline for $1 Million

If I were a lawyer I might have done the same. Possibly. In a move that should come as no surprise to any passenger who has experienced a travel nightmare courtesy of a commercial airline, a New York lawyer just announced that he is suing Delta Air Lines for $1 million. According to court documents, Richard Roth claims that the carrier ruined his family’s vacation by leaving them stranded in an airport for days and treating them like second-class citizens. Roth, who filed the lawsuit on behalf of himself and his mother, said he planned a Christmas 2007 trip to … Continue reading

More New Airline Fees

Okay, now I’ve heard everything. By now you know that American Airlines is charging passengers $15 to check in a single piece of luggage (and $25 for the second) on flights. And I’m sure you are well aware that most airlines are now charging more for extra legroom in their cabins and that the price of food and beverages is going up too. Well, now you’ll also have to dig deeper if you want to bring antlers on board Frontier Airlines. Yes, you read right—antlers. As in antlers that are normally connected to an animal’s head. Frontier Airlines (which, by … Continue reading

Travel Tidbits: Saving Money and Saving Lives

SAVING MONEY The soaring price of fuel is big news around the country, but it’s even bigger news where I live. I happen to reside near one of the nation’s largest trucking companies and as you can imagine the record breaking price of fuel is hitting the company where it hurts. So hard, in fact, that Schneider National just announced that it is cutting the top speed for its 10,600 rigs to 60 mph. By doing so the company estimates it can save nearly 4 million gallons of fuel per year. Prior to this week’s announcement Schneider had restricted drivers … Continue reading
