Coping with Death

We all have to cope with death. As the saying goes: “No one gets out of this world alive!” We know it must inevitably happen yet we are often not educated or prepared for it when it does come. We cope with the death of loved ones largely by avoiding its certainty for as long as possible, and hope that when the time comes we will somehow muddle through it. There is probably nothing in life we prepare for less, and yet there’s nothing in life that is more inevitable. When you think about it, it’s a funny way to … Continue reading

Jealousy and Its Close Relatives

Jealousy is an extremely destructive emotion that often leads to other sins. The Bible recounts a number of incidents of jealousy. Here are a few from the Old Testament. Rachel was jealous of Leah because her sister had children by Jacob and she did not, Genesis 30:1. Joseph’s brothers were jealous because Joseph was the favored son of his father, Genesis 37:11. Saul was jealous of David for the praise and popularity he had with the people, 1 Samuel 18:7-9, 16. David’s prosperity because God was with him and not Saul, 1 Samuel 18:14-15 provided another reason for Saul’s jealousy, … Continue reading

Who’s the Optimist/Pessimist in Your Relationship?

We’ve all heard the expression opposites attract, and what more obvious opposites are there than the optimist and the pessimist? But can the two survive (and happily) together in the same relationship? I think so. The Pessimist In my marriage, Wayne is predominately the pessimist. Not always. Sometimes we reverse rolls, but in general he tends to be less upbeat and have a less rosy outlook on life than me. He’s more prone to grumbling about any kind of bad situation we find ourselves in. Although, he has been known to make light of some of them to lessen the … Continue reading

10 Ways To Change Your Attitude

Yesterday we looked at changing our attitude which sounds easier to do than it is. So here are 10 practical suggestions for changing our attitude towards life and circumstances. 1. Focus on God and who He is, rather than ourselves and the circumstances. This is what Stephen did when he was being stoned for preaching about Jesus, Acts 7. 2. Remember who you are: ‘children of God,’ I John 3:2, ‘a chosen race, a royal priesthood…a people for God’s own possession,’ 1 Peter 2:9. 3. Remember Christ lives in you, Galatians 2:20, so you don’t have to try and cope … Continue reading

The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938)

I first saw this film as a child years ago on TV and I have it on DVD, but I’d never seen it on the big screen. I’ve always been of huge fan of Errol Flynn, and couldn’t pass up the opportunity to see this film on the bog screen when out local movie theatre elected to show this classic. Richard the Lion-Heart has gone off to fight in the Crusades and left his kingdom under the care of a regent. But Prince John ousts the king’s appointed regent and sets himself up as regent, inflicting unfair taxes on the … Continue reading

What Are You Teaching Your Children Through TV?

How much influence does your TV have on your children? We can teach them certain attitudes and values at home but chances are that many of the attitudes and values they see on TV shows will be counterproductive to what we are trying to teach them. In some homes the TV seems goes on first thing in the morning and says on till the last person is in bed at night. The TV is on during meals and when visitors come. It appears many people forget TVs come with an off switch. They sit and complain about the shows on … Continue reading

The Illusionist (2006)

I first saw the illusionist at the movies after reading a review of it and thinking it sounded interesting. The reviewer at the time said it could be ‘a bit slow.’ I’m not a fan of slow movies. When I saw The Illusionist, I could not believe anyone had ever made this comment. This film set in the 19th century captivated me from start to finish. A young boy played by Aaron Johnson encounters a magician, who sparks his interest in magic and illusion. While he is practicing a trick with an egg, comes to the attention of Sophie. Despite … Continue reading

The Boy With Green Hair (1948)

I admit to being a fan of Pat O’Brien and he was the reason we initially watched this film. In Australia the ABC channel often shows old black and white movies late at night. The film starts with a child, played by Dean Stockwell, who refuses to speak and will not even give his name when he is brought into the police station. After a time Dr Evans played by Robert Ryan, elicits the story of why the shaven headed child, has run away. From there it goes back to events leading up to his flight. Peter is an orphan … Continue reading

A Unique Story to Share

The death of a close friend would have to be a terrible thing to experience. Likewise, the death of a spouse would also have to be a terrible experience. Therefore I am not writing to judge anyone. However I recently heard about an awkward or perhaps just interesting situation that I wanted to share with you. It seems that school age best friends grew up together, went off to college together, and even got a job at the same place. These two ladies were tight. They double dated and spent much time at one another’s homes. As time passed one … Continue reading

Laziness -part 7- in Work

Laziness in our work situation presents a bad example to those outside the Christian faith. It can also cause severe problems. If David had been doing his work as king and leading his armies, 2 Samuel 11:1 instead of lounging at home, he would not have been in a position to see Bathsheba and events might not have taken the course they did. Think of the pain and suffering that might have been averted for him, his family and his country, if he had kept his mind on his job.Our laziness in the workplace might also affect others. Some people … Continue reading
