Glory Road (2006)

I’m going to state right from the beginning of this blog that I’m just slightly tired of all the movies that have been made about school teams that are in trouble, and then along comes a coach who tries something different, and the team makes it, and everyone is happy. That being said, and with the full disclosure that “Glory Road” is, indeed one of those films, I will proceed to also say that I did enjoy it more than most of those “other movies.” Josh Lucas, who always seems to play a background role or a sidekick up until … Continue reading

Choosing Service to Our Country Over Fame

A while back, I had blogged about people who had a brush with fame, then left it all to become average Joes. Today, I read a story about a guy who had all the credentials to be a pro athlete, but decided to leave that behind to serve in the military. While this is not a popular decision in today’s world, during World War II, most male celebrities decided to abandon their movie careers to join the military. Our country was at a time of peril and it just seemed like the right thing to do. People like Jimmy Stewart, … Continue reading

Shaq Takes A Shot At Helping Overweight Kids

Perhaps, Ruben Studdard was too busy… ABC is hoping for a slam-dunk when it airs a new reality TV series starring NBA All-Star Shaquille O’Neal aiding overweight children. According to network execs, the show will focus on childhood obesity and health. The series, which will run during the summer months, will feature the Miami Heat star and his effort to help Florida schoolchildren lose weight. Show producers say the series is currently being filmed in Broward County, Florida and tracks the lives of the children involved. O’Neal will reportedly be on hand to support the children and (in episodes yet … Continue reading

NBA’s Tim Hardaway – Some People Just Never Learn

Well, it had happened again. NBA player Tim Hardaway went on the radio to say that he “hated gay people.” Apparently, Tim hasn’t been keeping up with the whole “Grey’s Anatomy”/gay scandal. Hump, he should read our blogs! Anyhow, last Tuesday, Tim went to a Miami radio station for an interview. Show host Dan Le Batard asked Hardaway how he felt about former NBA player John Amaechi announcing his homosexuality. Amaechi made the announcement right before the release of his new autobiography, Man in the Middle. He is the first NBA player to publicly admit to being homosexual. After Le … Continue reading

Reindeer Games For Grown Ups

The other day my 2-year-old asked me what a reindeer game was. I smiled knowing that she has been obsessed with her new “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” DVD. I explained to her that the games Rudolph and his friends participated in were not unlike the ones she and her friends played during playgroup—minus the battery-operated toys. Then I started to elaborate even more (don’t ask why) telling her that reindeers enjoy playing some of the same games she does at the park. “The slide?” she asked. “Ah, well… “ I stammered. “More like tag and hide-and-seek,” I answered. “Those are … Continue reading

Space Jam: The Star Studded Cartoon Basketball Movie

When he was growing up my brothers’ two favorite things on the planet were sports and cartoons. Every morning he would be mesmerized by his favorite cartoon characters, and every afternoon he would want to go and play basketball or football with his friends. I imagine that his two obsessions were similar to the favorites of every other boy his age. The movie “Space Jam” takes both those things and puts them together in a movie. Space Jam is for the most part a basketball movie. Rather than be full of basketball stars however, Space Jam is full of cartoon … Continue reading

Basketball

Basketball is another good option for people who are trying to stay in shape and lose weight. The game of basketball requires a great deal of sprinting short distances and a good deal of jogging. Bouncing the ball while running or standing I place also burns calories. Jumping for the ball happens often in basketball and is good for building the legs. Shooting the ball and jumping for rebounds also help you to burn calories. Basketball helps to build your aerobic fitness, flexibility, strength and power, speed, lower body fat, and increase your agility. Basketball is another sport that is … Continue reading

Day Trip–A Game with Meaning

This day trip really won’t take the entire day. However, I feel compelled to share it with you in hopes you will take advantage of the opportunity. It’s a chance to witness the “thrill of victory and the agony of defeat.” A chance to watch friendly competition between players that you may be surprised to see hitting the hardwood. And a chance to reflect on how much we take for granted. These opportunities were presented to me when I was invited to take a trip to watch a weekly basketball game at our county’s Association for Retarded Citizens Community Center. … Continue reading
