What is Your Mantra?

It’s always a good thing to have a vision or over-arching goal for our lives. When we have a child with a disability, that vision may become much clearer. For example, we probably never considered joining the cause to fight muscular dystrophy until we had a child with the condition. Or until we adopted a child who was abused, we may not have considered standing up for the rights of children. Having a child with a disability can make us more sensitive to the plights of others and bolster our resolve to make a difference. Whether we choose to advocate … Continue reading

Evidence: The World Around Us

What types of evidence exist that point to the Lord and to His Word? I believe a strong evidence for the Lord is described in Romans 1:20 which states: “For His invisible attributes, namely, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made.” The creation – the world around us – clearly points to an Almighty Creator. Just today I was watching one of those nature shows. You know the ones I’m talking about – where the man is fearlessly hunting snakes that are longer … Continue reading

Make Yourself Trustworthy

Trust is one of those words that rolls off the tongue easily, but is harder to frame in an emotional definition. Trust is a sensation. It’s an experience. It’s a knowledge. Trust is very much linked with faith in that you put your belief into it – but trust also has tangible results. Initially, we learn to trust those who validate us. We distrust … Continue reading

LDS Because of Belief or LDS for Social Reasons

I sent out an email asking what issues LDS people are currently facing and received a plethora back, this being one of them. Initially I looked at it, pondered it and put it aside so that it could percolate a little more. I’m ready to address it now. You get out of life what you put into it. The same goes with becoming a “Mormon” or Latter-day Saint, as we prefer to be called. You get out of it what you put into it. Becoming a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints involves making covenants with … Continue reading

Standing for What We Believe

With the advent of HBO’s latest effort, “Big Love” many conversations are taking place around the water cooler, gardens, living rooms and parks of Latter-day saint society. With the topic came conversation revolving around standing for what we believe in and how to do it. It was not long ago that our beloved prophet, Gordon B. Hinckley, addressed this very thing. I quote, “Let our voices be heard. I hope they will not be shrill voices, but I hope we shall speak with such conviction that those to whom we speak shall know of the strength of our feeling and … Continue reading
