More Questions about Jett Travolta’s Health and Possible Extortion Plot

As if it weren’t bad enough to lose a child, now the Travoltas have to deal an alleged extortion plot. Paramedic Tarino Lightbourne as well as Bahamian Minister of Tourism Obie Wilchombe, and lawyer/Senator Pleasant Bridgewater have all been detained for attempted extortion. Lightbourne drove Jett Travolta to the hospital and has told his story to “Good Morning America” as well as several tabloids. “It was me, him [John], and Jett. I’ll never forget this day. I saw him lean over and hug his son and kiss his son and tell him he loved him and I did everything I … Continue reading

Identifying Autism in Babies

Numerous studies have shown that early intervention is key to getting a better outcome with autism-related therapies. Efforts are being made by physicians and teachers to identify autism in children as young as preschool age, but some experts say this still isn’t enough. Being able to identify babies under the age of three or four is the goal of some researchers. The average age of a diagnosis of autism is at almost four years old. Sage Publications and The National Autistic Society recently published a report on clinical assessment of autism in high-risk babies 18-months of age. A baby is … Continue reading

Putting Your Kitchen on a Diet

Now that we are well into January, many people are focusing on getting fit and healthy, and maybe even going on a diet. While this is also a goal of mine, to get fit, I have another goal. This goal is to put my kitchen on a diet. Kitchens tend to slowly collect a lot of things, from gadgets to food that never sees the light outside of the pantry. Other clutter can bloat a kitchen as well, such as mail, school papers and telephone notes. With the relative quiet of the after the holidays routine, now might be a … Continue reading

Parents Confused After Daughter Gets Booted from the Girl Scouts

Image that you’re Magi Klages’ parents. Your beautiful 8-year-old autistic daughter was part of a Brownie troop that got too big, so she was moved to a smaller group for children with special needs. All seems to be going well, until one day Magi throws a fit during a matt-weaving project. You are there to witness the entire event and don’t consider Magi’s behavior abnormal for an autistic child thrust into a new situation. But four days later you get a call saying that Magi is no longer welcome in the new troop. What do you do? If you are … Continue reading

A Thanksgiving to Remember

It will be a Thanksgiving to remember for the Reyes family this year. Despite the fact that they lost their home plus all of their belongings in the recent wildfires that scorched thousands of acres in Los Angeles County, mom Jan says the family will be counting their blessings tomorrow. Jan and the rest of her family, including her 7-year-old son Jonathan were able to escape the wind-blown blazes without suffering major injuries. That’s the good news. The bad news is that Jonathan, who has autism, lost every single one of his beloved Hot Wheels. The boy had reportedly spent … Continue reading

Saving Money on a Special Diet

When you discover that you need a special diet, you might start to panic. Not only do you have to figure out new ways of cooking and eating, but you may also see a spike in your grocery bill. Special foods sometimes can cost a lot more than what you usually buy. Recently, a member of my family was told a “low glycemic index diet” was needed. This diet pays close attention to foods that cause a sudden rise in blood sugar. The goal in this diet, is to eliminate many carbohydrates that might cause that spike. Each food has … Continue reading

Olympic Diets–The Method Behind the Madness

Even if you haven’t watched a single second of the Summer Olympic Games in China you likely know the following: A.) Michael Phelps is an American swimmer. B.) Michael Phelps has won more gold medals in these games than most other countries have since the inception of the modern day Olympics. C.) Michael Phelps ingests 12,000 calories per day to fuel his daily swims. The latter fact is the one that has sparked the most attention by regular folks who try to maintain their weight (or if they are lucky, lose a few pounds) with daily workouts. While Phelps’ diet … Continue reading

Michael Phelps’ Olympic Size Diet

I don’t envy Michael Phelps’ exercise regime, but who wouldn’t love to adopt his diet? The 23-year-old swimming sensation recently revealed what fuels his intense daily workouts in the pool… and to say that the Olympic athlete puts away a ton of food is an Olympic sized understatement. Phelps says his recipe for swimming success involves eating a jaw-dropping 12,000 calories a day. That’s more than most pregnant women eat in a week. Okay, maybe not, but it is darn near close. According to nutritionists, the average man of the same age and height (Phelps is 6’4”) should be ingesting … Continue reading

Stars Strike Back at Radio Talk Show Host

If you want to learn how to make enemies in Hollywood (and beyond) take lessons from Michael Savage. The popular (or once so) radio talk show host is feeling the heat from parents everywhere, especially those whose offspring are challenged with autism. On his nationally syndicated radio show last week Savage described 99 percent of children with autism as “brats.” (His exact quote was: “In 99 percent of the cases, it’s a brat who hasn’t been told to cut the act out.”) And he didn’t stop there. Savage went on to say: “What do you mean they scream and they’re … Continue reading
