Akavar 20/50: Day 1 (-4lbs)

I lost 4 pounds in 24 hours. I started the day with only six hours of sleep. That usually has me at borderline diabetic and craving starchy carbohydrates all day. I took one serving of Ultimate Orange, went to the gym and did 20 minutes of interval training on the elliptical trainer and then one set to failure on the chest press and flye machines. I was in and out of the gym in less than 45 minutes. Breakfast was a peanut butter sandwich made on a croissant. (I also had my usual pot of weak coffee.) As this doubles … Continue reading

Turkey as Diet Food

I know many of us consider turkey an annual binging food that we only see on Thanksgiving so what I am about to say may shock you. Turkey is an excellent diet food. Mind you, I said turkey, not turkey with stuffing, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, pumpkin pie and whipped cream. I’m a very busy mother of two boys so finding time to prepare healthy meals for myself between kiddie meals and bottles is practically an impossibility. Like most mothers, if I have nothing available that can be microwaved in less than two minutes and eaten, I usually fall back … Continue reading

Author Interview – Tracy Winegar on Autism

Yesterday I reviewed the new book, “Keeping Keller,” a touching novel about a young boy with undiagnosed autism. Today I am joined by Tracy Winegar, author of the book. Tracy, thank you for taking the time to chat with me. I’m curious—what inspired you to write “Keeping Keller?” Ever since my childhood I have been a writer, so it’s always been a dream. A few years ago I told my husband I was thirty, with four children, and it was never going to get easier. I decided if I didn’t write a novel then, I probably never would. My husband … Continue reading

New Cabbage Soup Diet Website

This just goes to show you that anybody can create a website and make money! Somebody struck Google advertising gold when they decided to start their own website about the Cabbage Soup Diet. Anybody who has done any kind of dieting has at least heard of the Cabbage Soup Diet. The diet that promises “The more soup you eat the more weight you lose”. This diet has been around far longer than the internet. It began in the days when diets were written down by hand and photocopied to be shared by co-workers and with family members. This new website … Continue reading

The Scarsdale Diet

This is an old diet that has been around for many years. I haven’t actually tried this version but it looks like a simple low calorie, low fat, low carb, drop a lot of weight in a week kind of diet. The first three days are starch free, so one is likely to drop a good bit of water weight initially. The rules of this diet are to drink at least four glasses of water per day and you can add the following condiments to your foods: herbs, salt, pepper, lemon, vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, soy sauce, mustard and ketchup. You … Continue reading

New Nutrisystem Celebrity

Imagine my surprise when I saw Marie Osmond hawking Nutrisystem in a television commercial yesterday. I knew she had been on Dancing with the Stars and I also knew that she had lost a good deal of weight, but it seems her 40 pound weight loss was due to a combination of the Nutrisystem Program and rigorous Dancing with the Stars workout regimen. Way to go, Marie! When critics blasted her and said she must be anorexic, Marie set the record straight: “First of all, I can’t be anorexic. I like food too much. I’m not on diet pills. And … Continue reading

Sting, Angela Bassett, Woody Harrelson, David Bowie, Lisa Bonet, Robin Williams, Donna Karan, Alicia Silverstone and Demi Moore are a just a few of the celebrities you may have heard of who are eating raw foods and proud of it. We’re hearing more and more about raw food being all the rage these days so I thought it was high time we took a look at what this diet/lifestyle really entails. The raw food diet is all about eating living foods that still have all their healthy enzymes intact. For obvious reasons, this is a vegetarian diet that relies solely … Continue reading

If you’ve been trying to lose weight for a while, chances are you’ve heard of LipoDissolve treatments. Supposedly, you can go see a doctor and he’ll inject a chemical into your fattiest fat places that will simply melt the fat away. Yep, just melt it away. Don’t be a sucker. One company that promised this magic fat meltaway injection is Go Fig Inc. This is a very interesting choice in names when you consider what has happened to some of its patients. But first, let’s use a little bit of logic to examine the promise of lipodissolve treatments. The injection … Continue reading

What Can The Mediterranean Diet Do For You?

We keep hearing about the Mediterranean Diet but nobody tell us exactly what it is. We keep hearing about what it can do for those of us with heart disease, diabetes and arthritis and yet, where are the instructions? We’re told the Mediterranean Diet leads to a longer life. What we aren’t told is how to get started on the Mediterranean Diet. In the 1950s, Ancel Keys, a nutritionist, began what was called the Seven Countries which linked the eating patterns of Greece, Italy, Yugoslavia, Finland, Netherlands, Japan and the United States. The study found that those who followed a … Continue reading
