On Turning Three

My little lady turns three today, at 12:14 PM (Eastern Standard Time) to be specific. It has been a remarkable three years. We have seen so much together (Florida, Maine, North Carolina, New York, Rhode Island and France) and shared a countless array of hilarious moments. So what amazing activities do we have planned for her big day? Well, nothing really. Sitting around the house, coloring, baking a chocolate cake (with white icing) and general silliness. And for her party tomorrow? Immediate family, two close friends, pizza, soft pretzels and selections of hot hors d’oeuvres and fruit. Wow, we are … Continue reading

Spending for a toddler party!

My daughter’s birthday is today. She is three years old. (How did that happen?) When I first started planning her party I wanted to only invite a few other children, so we could keep it low budget low key. It didn’t work out that way. First I have to invite my friends with young children, then I had to invite her friends, then the kid from church and the boy from my gym and well, before I could sing Happy Birthday, I’d invited eight children and their parents and well, I’ve got thirty people coming now including adults and children. … Continue reading

Need a Birthday Party Idea? Try Zoo Pals

Okay, some kids just aren’t that into trademark characters. On the other hand, maybe your child is so over a once beloved character and hasn’t moved on to a new favorite yet. Then, consider going with Zoo Pals tableware, which includes plates, bowls, cups, flatware, and even slide-lock bags that feature these zoo favorites. Baby’s 1st Birthday

Is that day approaching far faster than you were expecting? First birthdays catch up to us long before we are ready for them and when it comes to the day to mark the passing of that first birthday, the celebration, the cake, the candles and yes, even most of the decorations are for us and for the memory books than they are for the babies. On my daughter’s first birthday, we made her a Bear in the Big Blue House cake and her eyes grew as round as saucers when she saw it for the first time. There was a … Continue reading

Special Occasion T-shirts

I’ve thrown a lot of birthday parties in my time, and part of my job is coming up with original and fun birthday party ideas. But the T-shirts I made at the last minute for my son’s tenth birthday party is the thing that everyone still talks about, so it obviously made the biggest impression of everything I’ve done. Here’s what I did: I bought plain white T-shirts for everyone in the family. To save money, I shopped in the men’s underwear department and bought thick Hanes undershirts. I washed and dried the T-shirts. Meanwhile, I found a good, recent … Continue reading

My Wife is Great (Duh!)

The stuff she comes up with…. She works really hard at bringing our oldest’s visions to life, be those visions recipes, stories, images, or birthday parties. Since she was two, we have always done a puppet show, which is normally my responsibility. We’ve used hand-puppets and stick puppets, based on whatever is available. Some years I make up a story, like when Dora got to visit Elmo’s World. Last year, we retold the story of Eric Carle’s Little Cloud, and used a spritz bottle to spray our gets with some rain water. But of course, it’s my wife who does … Continue reading
