Ice Castles (1978)

Every so often when I blog about a movie, I get so wrapped up in the emotions I felt while watching the film that I just have to sit and sniffle for a minute before I can write. I loved “Ice Castles” to the point of silliness, and so pardon me a moment while I sit and sniffle. Thank you; I believe I can now go forth. I’ve mentioned how much I love figure skating and how much I love romantic movies. This one just hit the spot in so many ways. Lynn-Holly Johnson stars as Lexie, a sixteen-year-old girl … Continue reading

Little Stevie Wonderful

One balmy night in 1963, I turned the big stereo “hifi” on and heard Little Stevie Wonder for the first time. It was an unusually warm night in the winter, even for Galveston. The ocean breeze was blowing in through the open windows and I was home alone. I remember hearing the harmonica and thinking what a catchy tune. It was “Fingertips Part 1”. I was hooked on Stevie Wonder; he and I were both twelve years old when he released that song. I learned later he was blind at birth, played not only the harmonica, but had also mastered … Continue reading

Books for the Blind

My doctor told me that my eyesight will continue to deteriorate as I get older. I intend to fight that with lots of carrots and lutein, but I’ve often wondered what I would do if I ever went blind. I would miss seeing my children’s faces, the starry sky at night, the cute dimples in my husband’s cheeks, and I would miss being able to read. This made me wonder what programs are available to bring books to the blind. I found some I think would be very useful and I encourage you to look them over and share them … Continue reading

My Unsocialized Daughter

Socialization, as defined by the dictionary, is the process by which one learns the behaviors necessary to survive in one’s culture. One who is socialized then, is one who uses and applies cultural knowledge and understanding to various situations. According to the definition of socialization, we can say that socialized people learn to recognize the ‘norm’. I know some people would buck the abstract concept of ‘the norm’. But in reality there are things that we can agree upon that are considered socially unacceptable. Running and yelling through a library, dancing on top of a table at dinner. . .you … Continue reading

Amazing Blind Teen Uses Echolocation to “SEE” — Watch the Video Clip!

If you haven’t come across this news story yet, you’re likely to hear a whole lot about it soon. Not only has Ben Underwood been featured on CBS News, but he’s also been highlighted in a story in PEOPLE magazine. My prediction is that, like Jason McElwain before him, this kid might just make an appearance on Oprah Winfrey. Stay tuned. Ben Underwood, who is now fourteen years old, lost both his eyes to cancer as a toddler. He now has two artificial eyes, made of plastic. But his disability hasn’t stopped him from living a very normal life. If … Continue reading
