Boy Bander’s New Title

Former ‘N Sync hottie (and onetime aspiring cosmonaut) Lance Bass has a new gig—–book author. Apparently, the heartthrob is making like Jenna Bush and penning a new book, but unlike the first daughter’s foray into the literary world, Bass plans to make his a tell all. According to news reports, the 27-year-old plans to reveal “all about his life, his music and his sexuality.” The memoir, entitled, Out of Sync, will hit stores in October. But, for those of you who can’t wait that long the book’s publisher provided a sneak peak of what will be covered in the pages. … Continue reading

Christian Book Distributor’s Bargain Bonanza

*sigh* All the money I’m saving by reading MaryAnn’s frugal blogs is being spent on deals! I’m almost ready to quit saving money on them. Not! I have this fantasy where one year I’ll spend nothing that isn’t absolutely necessary. Fortunately, I always wake up! I ordered today from Christian Book Distributors. They’re having a Bargain Bonanza. Here’s what was in my basket: Lucy’s Christmas Box – I loved the Chronicles of Narnia. Yeah, it was Disney-fied and Aslan was wimped down, but for the most part, it kept the magic of the original C.S. Lewis classic. We’ve collected and … Continue reading

Jenna Bush–The Author

One of the president’s daughters is getting a new title–author. According to news reports, 25-year-old Jenna Bush has written her first book, Ana’s Story: A Journey of Hope. The book, which will be published this fall, is not political in nature. Rather, Bush says it tells the story of a 17-year-old single mother who is living with HIV. In an interview with news reporters, Bush said she met the subject of her book while she was working as an intern for UNICEF in Panama. (Prior to the move Bush was a public school teacher in Washington, D.C.) In fact, Bush … Continue reading

A “Text” Book Like No Other

I’m not an author, nor do I aspire to be one, but I have friends who long to have their hard work published and to them I preface this blog by saying: Hang in there. This blog is not meant to torture you. Instead, I hope it shows what can happen when you mix a bit of creativity with a passion for making money. A novel chock-full of misspelled words has just been published in Finland. The book’s narrative consists entirely of cell phone text messages. According to the publisher, “The Last Messages” tells the story of a fictitious information-technology … Continue reading

Free Full-Size Baby Care Book

This is one of the best freebies I have ever received. I couldn’t believe what a great book this is, and it is free for the asking. State Farm Insurance is offering a free full-sized baby care book, titled, Caring for Your Baby and Young Child: Birth to Age 5. The book is from the American Academy of Pediatrics, and is a very comprehensive manual for child care and child raising information. I have the book sitting on my shelf, and even though I am an experienced mom, I refer back to it all of the time. I find myself … Continue reading

Tori’s Tell-All

Well, she certainly is lacking material. That’s what I thought when I first heard actress Tori Spelling is planning to write a memoir about her privileged childhood and well-documented adult years. This on top of her other “entertainment” project: running a bed and breakfast with husband Dean McDermott for an upcoming Oxygen network series. According to PEOPLE magazine, Simon & Schuster plans to publish the book by the former “Beverly Hills 90210” star and expectant mom. I had to chuckle when I read that Spelling told USA Today that she plans to write her book when “the baby is napping.” … Continue reading

Singer Turned Children’s Book Author

First it was Madonna… now Gloria Estefan is throwing her hat into the literary world too. The five-time Grammy winner has exchanged her piano keyboard for a computer keyboard to write about a brown-and-white bulldog named “Noelle” that beat the odds. Not unlike the famous singer who fought back following her 1990 bus crash, which left her paralyzed and wondering if she would ever walk again. Estefan, the author, has just put the final touches on “Noelle’s Treasure Tale”–the second installment in a series of colorful children’s books featuring the curious Noelle and her adventures. The book teaches kids about … Continue reading

Who Said That?

Do you know who coined the phrase, “There’s a sucker born every minute?” Most people think it was showman P.T. Barnum. How about the phrase, “The British are coming?” Were you taught it was Paul Revere? Apparently, neither man uttered the phrases–according to the author of a new meticulously researched book of quotations. The book attempts to set the record straight on the aforementioned popular phrases that have crept into everyday use, including Sigmund Freud’s sage advice that “sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.” (He didn’t quite say that, although his biographer thinks he would have approved of the … Continue reading

A Great Guide For Your Hawaiian Vacation

A number of Families.com members have commented that they will soon be embarking on vacations to Hawaii. All I can say is: “WAH—Take me with you.” Yes, I am jealous, but at the same time, I am thrilled that you will get to partake in all that the Islands have to offer. There are many reasons Hawaii is called the “Jewel of the Pacific.” (See my many travel blogs on the Aloha State for several of them.) Another way you can learn about the opportunities that await you in paradise is to pick up the “Aloha Book.” The “Aloha Book” … Continue reading

Garlic and Sapphires by Ruth Reichl

I just finished the former New York Times restaurant critic’s book, Garlic and Sapphires, and found myself craving a fine dining experience. Although I’ll skip the foie gras, Reichl’s book had me pining for a three-hour, seven course tasting menu full of exotic foods. Reichl’s book is full of her dining experiences in New York, where she never judged a restaurant unless she visited it at least three times, usually more. Her gift for helping the reader experience a meal is unbeatable, and I appreciated her fair reviews of smaller, ethnic places ignored by her predecessor. The heat she took … Continue reading
