From the Forums: What Else is In Formula?

I began a new feature yesterday in the baby blog called ‘from the forums’ where we discuss a question that has recently been raised in the forums. In these features, you will always find links between the blog and the appropriate forum. Yesterday we talked about the types of carbohydrates (sugars) that are in formula as well as the type of proteins that are in formula. Today, we’ll tackle the rest of formula ingredients: fats, vitamins and minerals and additional nutrients. DHA & ARA If you’re feeding your infant formula you’ve undoubtedly heard all the hoopla about two fats that … Continue reading

From the Forums: What Exactly Is in Formula Anyways?

‘From the Forums’ is a new feature I would like to introduce to the baby blog. My purpose? To get baby blog readers into the forums and forum participants reading our blogs. Every blog in the ‘from the forums’ series will address an issue brought up in the forums and will link to that forum for further discussion. Likewise, the forum in question, will have a link to the appropriate blog. Our first topic is what exactly is in formula. As you likely are aware there are a variety of formulas to choose from. Some babies seem to care less … Continue reading

Ask a Baby Blogger: Are You Anti-Formula?

Someone sent me a private message saying, “I noticed that you only write articles about breastfeeding. Why don’t you write anything about formula? Are you anti-formula? I figured that if one person had this question, perhaps more of our baby readers did as well. I will start by saying that I am absolutely, 100% NOT against formula. It provides a needed alternative to moms who can’t or shouldn’t breastfeed and I do recognize that. So why do I write all of the breastfeeding articles? Reason #1 Most of the articles I write for baby are on the topics of multiples … Continue reading

Should Formula Cans Contain Warning Labels?

We have been talking about this particular issue in the forums. You can catch up on the debate here. However, I have to say that there isn’t too much of a debate. The overwhelming majority of people feel that warning labels on formula cans are “like a slap in the face to mothers who choose or have to formula feed.” However, like all debates, we are fueled with our personal experiences and I thought it might be helpful to provide some background information on the issue. Background The initiative to put warning labels on cans of formula is backed by … Continue reading

Five Ways to Make Bottle Feeding Easier on You

While we talk a lot about breast-feeding, we also talk about bottles, formulas, pumped breast milk and more. While I pumped for the first six and a half months, my daughter drank formula as well as breast milk. Because she seemed to have bad reactions to other formulas, I put her on Nutramigen as the supplement when there wasn’t enough breast milk. Nutramigen was expensive, but because it was only the supplement, it didn’t cost as much as it might have. The following five tips were what made bottle-feeding easer on me – I hope they make it easier on … Continue reading

The Miracle of the Breast Pump

Sadly, I cannot remember the name of this wonderful woman who came to see me. She was a part of a mother and child business name. She came in and she sat down and we talked and talked and talked. After I explained to her what I was experiencing, she walked me through another trial run of trying to get the baby to nurse. We knew the baby could suck, because she sucked on bottles like a pro, so what was her issue with nursing. After about an hour, we were sitting back at the table, the baby cradled in … Continue reading
