Using Internet Resources

The beginning of my search was a very difficult time. It was a touchy subject between my adoptive mother and I, and the last thing I wanted to do was upset her. I was HER daughter and that was all that should have mattered from her standpoint. But unfortunately, as most adoptees know, it isn’t all that matters. Because we do have a place that we came from. And we do need to seek out that information. Well, most of us do. Because my adoptive mother was not supportive of my searching, it was difficult to access some of the … Continue reading

Beginning My Search For My Biological Mother (2)

Continuing the article…. Daria, who is still a dear friend of mine, truly one of the best. She was “almost” a biological mother in the triad. She had given birth to a beautiful baby girl she named Jenna. She was going to relinquish Jenna because she was so young and didn’t think she could take care of her. As we all know, teenage mom’s have odds stacked against them dramatically. She gave Jenna up for a couple of days and came back to get her. Thankfully her case worker knew that Daria wasn’t sure about this and no permanent placement … Continue reading

Beginning My Search For My Biological Mother (1)

The search for my biological mother was long, and grueling. I encountered many obstacles, and discovered a lot of horrible information, as well as a lot of untrue information, along the way. Throughout the whole process I had to remind myself that it was all the past, and what mattered now, was finding her and my future. My search began in 1994 on the AOL Adoption board. My son had just been born and I was determined to find the answers I had longed to know for so long. Many states have different ages in which adoption information can be … Continue reading

One Gave Me Roots, The Other Wings

Hi there! I’m Nicole Humphrey. You probably recognize me from the scrapbooking or frugal living blogs, but I have just accepted the position of blogger on the adoption blog as well. I am very excited about it. I will still be very active over at the scrapbooking and frugal living blogs, I just added another topic near and dear to my heart. I have really enjoyed being a part of this ever growing community at families.com over the past several months and look forward to forming even more new friendships in the days to come. As I am sure you … Continue reading

Luke and Laura—Back Together Again!

“General Hospital” fans are ecstatic (at least I am) about the news that Luke and Laura Spencer (the ABC soap opera’s most popular couple) will be reunited once again. According to ABC, Genie Francis, who originated the role of Laura nearly 30 years ago, will return to the show to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Luke and Laura’s wedding. The fictional wedding, seen by 30 million viewers on Nov. 16, 1981, is still ranked as one of the most watched shows in television history. At the time, there was so much hype surrounding the TV nuptials that Newsweek magazine put … Continue reading

Family Reunion Committees

After the specifics are decided (see my blog Planning a Family Reunion) then you can organize committees to make sure that all of the details are taken care of. Of course one person is ultimately in charge of making sure that the committees do their job but it’s a good idea to share the responsibility. Finance Committee This committee is responsible for handling the money and bookkeeping for the reunion. If you plan on holding yearly reunions it is a good idea to open a bank account for the reunion. Make sure that the person who signs the checks is … Continue reading

Family History Reunion

If you or someone in your family has been compiling family history data or you already have a record then a family history reunion is a great place to showcase this priceless information. A family history reunion can be as simple or as elaborate as you want. A simple family history reunion could consist of a program where different family members read about ancestors. When choosing stories to share try and chose stories with a multi-generational appeal, don’t make the stories to long, and focus on the most interesting parts. As a child my favorite stories dealt with the childhoods … Continue reading

Simple Family Reunions

The simplest type of family reunion is a barbeque or picnic. But even this type of family reunion takes some planning in order to be successful. You will probably want to start between 10 and 11am, this gives people time to drive to the location. Expect some people to be late, so let people know what time lunch will be served. Keep the food simple, you can ask people to bring dishes or buy the salads and desserts at a deli. The main course could be bread and sandwich toppings, fried chicken, sloppy joes, or hamburgers and hotdogs. Make sure … Continue reading

Financing a Family Reunion

There are a number of ways that a family reunion can be financed. You will want to choose the finance method based upon the size and type of reunion that you are planning. Set Fee Based upon the activities that you are going to do, the location chosen, and the amount of people that are going to attend you can determine a set fee that each family will have to pay. It is better to estimate high than end up without enough money, unless you are willing to fund the difference. Any money that is not used can be put … Continue reading

Planning A Family Reunion

A family reunion can be as simple as a picnic at the park or elaborate as a week’s stay at a resort. It depends on the size, budget, and time frame of your reunion. For starters you need to decide who will be invited, who will plan the reunion, the date of your reunion, and what type of reunion you will have. I will discuss other details such as activities, finances, and further planning in later blogs. Who Will Be Invited A reunion can consist of parents and their children’s families or it can extend outward. My father’s family often … Continue reading
