Greyhound Helping Cash-Strapped Travelers

Given the sky-high price of gas these days, I would just as soon leave the driving to anyone else. If filling up your vehicle is emptying your wallet, you may be thinking twice about hitting the highway on a spring break getaway.  Fortunately, Greyhound is lending a helping hand to cash-strapped travelers. North America’s largest bus company just announced a bonus to its companion fares.  Now, three people can ride at half price with the purchase of one full-fare adult ticket, making group travel cheaper than ever. “Whether you’re a family gathering for a reunion, a baseball fan watching your … Continue reading

Does Your Child Ride the Bus to School?

My baby starts kindergarten in a couple weeks, and up until last week I knew exactly how she was getting there. We live a mere 3.5 miles from my daughter’s school. That’s walking distance in our world. Plus, it’s not all up hill, and she wouldn’t be trudging through snow barefoot to get there. Still, because of logistical factors the decision to drive her in the family car was made and that was that… until last week. That’s when we received a postcard from the bus company detailing when and where our kindergartener should stand if she wanted a free … Continue reading

Travel Updates: Cheap Trips and More to do in New York this Summer

CHEAP TRIPS It was hard to believe the first time I heard about it-—a bus ride from New York to Washington, D.C. for a single dollar. It’s true (although there are some restrictions) and now I’m learning that BoltBus is not the only company offering the deal. In fact, the $1 deal was actually inspired by a similar promotion launched by a discount bus line called Megabus. Last year Megabus started offering intercity travel for as low as $1. It started with service from Chicago to other Midwest cities such as Detroit, St. Louis, Milwaukee and Cleveland. A few months … Continue reading

Saving on Summer Travel: Take the Bus

Not just any bus… How would you like to travel from New York to Washington — and back — for less than the cost of a candy bar and a can of soda? Sounds too good to be true, doesn’t it? Well, brace yourselves budget conscious travelers—-it’s the real deal. A new company called BoltBus is offering tickets from the Big Apple to D.C. for as low as a $1 each way. The super cheap price is an attempt to lure summer travelers away from trains, planes and their own automobiles. I guess I should inform you that there is … Continue reading

When Was the Last Time You Rode a Greyhound?

Okay, I’ll go first. It was 1990. I was in college traveling to my aunt and uncle’s for Thanksgiving and the ride that would have taken 2 hours by car took almost 5 hours by bus. But, that wasn’t the worst part. The most horrific part of the trip had nothing to do with the ride itself; rather it was the 30 minute wait at the bug infested Greyhound bus terminal that made me turn to my school’s ride board for subsequent out-of-town trips. Yup, I ditched the dog after that trip. And really it wasn’t just the bugs, the … Continue reading

“Park Your Car For A Penguin”

How’s that for a catchy tag line? One transportation group says if penguins could talk they would likely urge travelers to think about them and take a bus. “Motorcoaches are nice and don’t melt our ice.” Another great line. The hits keep coming in an eight-page educational booklet produced by the American Bus Association aimed at sending an important message to policy-makers. The pamphlet is titled “Save A Penguin. Take A Motorcoach.” According to leaders in the bus industry, by supporting motorcoach transportation, which gets about 184 miles per gallon and is one of the most efficient ways to travel, … Continue reading

$1 MegaBus Fares

Los Angeles to San Diego for a dollar? And LA to Las Vegas for a dollar, too? Chicago to Detroit for $15? This must be too good to be true. But it’s not! A dollar gets me gas to the grocery store and back. But MegaBus is running a promotion where at least two seats on every bus will be offered for a dollar. That’s “at least”. There were several on the LA-SD route. If I wanted to take the time to put in different dates, I could probably find a dollar deal out of Chicago as well. The only … Continue reading

Sunday Travel Funnies: Someone’s Not Laughing

Not everyone gets to ride to work in a space shuttle (though more and more people are getting to blast off after they die) so it stands to reason that when NASA gets ready to send astronauts into orbit the media comes out in full force. Recently, though, having all eyes on the launch pad at the Kennedy Space Center proved a bit embarrassing for the space agency. A few days ago the spacecraft Endeavour was moved out on the launch pad amidst pomp, circumstance and a huge banner that read “Go Endeavor.” A festive touch… only the shuttle’s name … Continue reading

Benefits of Traveling by Bus

If you were like most people, when you think of travel, you think of the airlines or rental car. Unfortunately, another mode of travel should be considered – the bus. In the 1970s, I remember traveling all across the country in a Greyhound bus. In fact, I met some great people and actually enjoyed my trips very much. However, it seems that bus travel has slowly been forgotten, which is a real shame. Years ago, traveling by bus was glamorous but today, we view it as a third-rate source of transportation. Sadly, some services have been eliminated, drivers go on … Continue reading

Frequent-RIDER Miles?

You’ve heard of frequent-flier programs. Created by the airlines, members can earn miles on flights, staying at partner hotels, or shopping at participating stores. The miles can then be redeemed for free flights or other awards. Well, now a popular bus company is “borrowing” the idea. Greyhound is introducing a new Road Rewards program. However, unlike the airlines’ frequent-flier program, Greyhound’s Road Rewards program operates on a 12-month rolling cycle, which means you have 12 months from the time you sign up to collect “Destination Points” until they expire. You earn points by purchasing tickets. You receive one point for … Continue reading
