Fun and Tasty Easter Projects for Kids: Candy Nests

I have a 3-year-old who loves to cook (sometimes more than she likes to eat) and I could not recommend an easier recipe than this one to make for Easter. It only requires two ingredients (the most child-friendly on the planet: chocolate and cereal) and doesn’t require any baking. And the best part: there’s no icky, sticky, gooey mess to clean up. Honestly, this project yields less mess than coloring Easter eggs. What’s more, the end product is so delicious your kids might have a hard time saving them to show off on Easter Sunday. As I mentioned earlier each … Continue reading

Fruit Flavored Fudge

Earlier today I mentioned that I was over Christmas cookies. I have eaten more than my share for the rest of the year and once my daughter and I deliver the rest of the tins we put together for friends and business associates our house will officially be cookie-free. The only problem… it’s now a fudge-filled zone. Blame my neighbor. She just dropped off some fabulous homemade fudge (see recipes below). And not just any delicious chocolate fudge (that would have sufficed), nooooo she had to concoct fudge infused with cherries and eggnog. Oh how I love the holidays. CHOCOLATE … Continue reading

Recipes for Leftover Halloween Candy

Do you have any leftover Halloween candy? Since my daughter’s unfortunate post-Halloween illness she hasn’t touched a single sweet treat. (Who would have imagined anything good could have resulted from 4 days of the stomach flu?) Needless to say, we are drowning in chocolate, Starburst, lollipops, Nerds, and Smarties. Last night as I was making my Thanksgiving shopping list I vowed that I would get rid of the candy someway or another. (Mind you I already gave away two big bags filled with Halloween leftovers.) I have to clear out the candy in order to make room for the Turkey … Continue reading

Candy Hang-Overs

I wrote the other day (with great glee and jubilation) about the onset of the “candy season”—Halloween seems to signal the start of the season of sweets for me and I actually ache and crave those chocolatey little morsels. But, fast forward a couple days and now that I have picked up more candy wrappers than a sanitation worker, and I’m starting to have some doubts… Candy wrappers in the washing machine, candy wrappers on the counter, and most annoying of all—candy wrappers in the candy bowl. The four of us (and our perpetual extras) have definitely been eating our … Continue reading

Halloween Candy vs. My Stomach

I love Halloween. I love taking an idea and turning it into a costume. I love the groups of little kids dressed up and shouting “trick or treat” at the door. And of course… I love the candy. When I was little — you may remember this, too — there were all sorts of candy scares around Halloween time. Urban legends (and real news stories) of people doing very hurtful things to candy, like inserting pins or razor blades. I remember carefully checking each and every wrapper for suspicious holes, and being forced to throw out home-made treats. It was … Continue reading

Candy Time!

I realized this past week that my body is completely trained and conditioned. Or, perhaps it is my brain that is conditioned and it tells my body that come the end of October, it is time to start expecting the annual onslaught of candy. Yes, I’m craving chocolate—little wrapped morsels of all sorts of chocolate—it doesn’t have to be fancy and expensive, my body just knows it is candy time—and mine is not the only body in my household reacting to this conditioning either! About two weeks ago, all three of my kids starting asking me, “Isn’t it time you … Continue reading

Entertaining: Hosting Halloween

These days, you just can’t be too careful. That’s why many parents are now taking children to Halloween parties or hosting Halloween parties themselves, instead of going out trick-or-treating. It makes sense, but it’s sad that we have allowed our society to become so dangerous that children can’t even trick-or-treat. The good news is there is no reason children can’t still have fun. When hosting a Halloween party, encourage everyone to come in costume. It adds to the party atmosphere immediately. You might even want to dress up this year. How long has it been since you were in costume … Continue reading

Best Buys for October

Getting ready for those trick or treaters? There is plenty of candy on sale right now, of course. You’ll be able to buy full size candy bars and be the best-loved house in the neighborhood. So, don’t forget to stock up for your own family. Just after Halloween, I once found full size candy bars at 10 for a dollar. They made great movie snacks! Remember, you can freeze most candy bars and chocolate for use throughout the year. They keep for months and months. Want to find out what else is a good deal in the month of October? … Continue reading

Free Mike and Ike Candy

When I was a kid, one of my brother’s favorite jokes was, “Want to know how to keep a nerd in suspense?” “I’ll tell you tomorrow.” Or, on a piece of paper, “Turn over to find out how to keep a nerd busy.” Of course, it had the same message on the other side. Not that your children are nerds (mine are), but Mike and Ike have a sure-fire way to occupy them. In honor of their new tangy flavors, they’re giving away free candy. Yep, completely free, 500 bags per month. The catch is that you have to spin … Continue reading

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (1971)and(2005)

The classic story of “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” comes from the children’s book written by Roald Dahl in 1964, and has since been made into two major motion pictures, the first in 1971 and starring Gene Wilder (rated G)and the second in 2005 and starring Johnny Depp (rated PG). The story is, of course, the same in both movies. Charlie Bucket is a very poor boy who lives in a broken down shack with both sets of grandparents and his mother. (In the Depp film, he has a father as well.) Willy Wonka, famous candy maker, has a factory … Continue reading
