Dad’s Losing It: How have you been?

The little hiatus is over here at Families.com and I would love to tell you that during the break my eating and exercise routine has been on-point, but I do not fancy myself a liar, so I will say no such thing. To be honest, I have been having a rough stretch recently with sweets, cookies, donuts and soda entering my body at a way-too frequent clip. I have also been seen eating potato chips (which I do not really even enjoy) and ice cream (Girl Scout Cookie Thin Mint – which I enjoy very much. I am helpless to … Continue reading

Celebrity PEEPS

Is there anyone out there who doesn’t enjoy those sugary, chewy (not to mention, oh so cute) Peeps brand marshmallow candies? You know the ones shaped like bunnies and chicks that your brother would steal from your Easter basket then chomp their heads off to torture you (okay, maybe that ritual just occurred in my happy family)? Regardless, Peeps are an institution. When I was a kid they only came in three colors: yellow, pink and white. These days even my toddler daughter knows that she can ask the Easter bunny for electric blue, hot pink, acid purple, and grassy … Continue reading

Valentine’s Day: Show Your Love with Dark Chocolate

I have been saying it for years. I knew chocolate had to be good for people. I didn’t only say it because chocolate happens to be my favorite treat of all time, although that may have played some small role, but I actually believed that chocolate made me feel better. I have been teased for this theory, but now I have validation. I’m not talking about the short-lived “high” many people get from the sugar and caffeine either. I always believed that eating small amounts of chocolate on a regular basis helped me feel better. My favorite is dark chocolate, … Continue reading

There is no need to spend a fortune at the card store. The key is to getting creative and using whatever you have on hand. One year, I used the luminaries (paper bags with cut outs that … Continue reading

Christmas Clearance Candy

Have a family sweet tooth? Stock up on after Christmas clearance candy and save big throughout the year. One of my favorite after Christmas hunts is for all of that yummy clearance candy. I have gotten some great deals. Right after the holidays, I head over to the grocery store. I stock up on our family favorites and use them in some unexpected ways. You can check pharmacies and big name stores for clearance candy, but personally I found that the most clearance candy can be found at the supermarkets. Most candy (especially those bite size candy bars) freeze well. … Continue reading

Ideas For Leftover Halloween Candy

Ding. Ding. Time for round three of trick-or-treating. We happen to live in a state where trick-or-treat times vary from county to county. Our community borders three counties so we had trick-or-treaters visit Saturday, Sunday, and more will come today. Which means I had to stock up on massive amounts of candy. Inevitably we will have leftovers and once I add that to my own daughter’s haul and “extras” from my husband’s office we’re talking serious candy overload. If you find yourself in a similar situation (oh woe is us), you may be looking for something productive to do with … Continue reading
