Changing Your Pet’s Food

Back in November, my cousin who owns a pet store gave all the dogs in the family a can of premium dog food. Appropriately enough, the flavor was “Thanksgiving Dinner” and included things like turkey, rice, dried fruit, and other holiday treats. A family member who shall remain nameless split one large can between her three dogs. The next day, she was dismayed to report that all three dogs had suffered what we like to call “pudding butt” — otherwise known as diarrhea. She tried to warn me against giving the Thanksgiving Dinner to my own dogs, because she thought … Continue reading

From Functional to Fashionable: The Best Drinking Bowl for Your Pet

Once upon a time, the premise of a fashionable drinking bowl for a pet would’ve seemed ludicrous. Many would have said, “It’s just a cat or dog for crying out loud. Put some water in a spare bowl and be done with it.” Thank heavens for the craftsmen who understand that our pets are family. We enjoy pampering them, especially when it comes to things they use all the time. So it makes perfect sense drinking bowls have evolved from spare bowls into so much more. [h]The Good Old-Fashioned Bowl[/h] Certainly a spare bowl will work just fine. But if … Continue reading

Nutrients Your Pets Need

It isn’t easy to decipher the list of ingredients on your pet food labels. Knowing what nutrients your pets need can help you understand what you’re feeding your dog or cat. Proteins are the building blocks for cells, tissues, and organs. Proteins are made up of two types of amino acids: essential amino acids (which cannot be synthesized by your pet’s body) and non-essential amino acids. Animal-based proteins like chicken, lamb, beef, fish, and egg provide essential amino acids for your pets. Vegetables, cereals, and soy can provide some amino acids, but not all of the essential amino acids your … Continue reading

Morris The Cat: One Finicky Feline

Surely there are fewer cats with more recognizable faces than the finicky orange tabby that represented Nine Live Cat foods in his own inimitable feline way for so many years. Morris was an unlikely and rather reluctant star, who got at least the second of his nine lives when he was discovered in a suburban Chicago animal shelter back in 1968. His days were certainly numbered there as an adult stray male named Luck, but there remained an air about him that was different; this lonely tabby had style, personality and panache. It was love at first sight for professional … Continue reading

Edible Craft Projects

Okay, Mom and Dad, here are some fun ways to get your kids to eat, although you will have to lift the rule about playing with food, at least temporarily. Sunny Snack Place a pancake or waffle in the center of each child’s plate. Give your children blueberries to make eyes and a nose for the face. Use thin slices of cantaloupe for the smile. Slice strawberries and surround the outside edge of the pancake or waffle with the slices, all the way around the plate. Make sure the wide end is near the pancake or waffle and the point … Continue reading

Making Your Own Catfood: Should You Or Shouldn’t You?

Recently, one of my cats developed an allergy and no one was quite sure what it was (and still isn’t). I know that sounds almost funny, as you hear of people being allergic to cats but not usually the other way around. We are sure, however, that it is not people that our Maine coon cat, Jasmine, is allergic to! To change all of the cat food and replace it with specialty brands was too expensive an alternative as there are five animals in our household. (Or put another way, that’s a total of twenty legs!) After some thought, I … Continue reading
