No Chance to Miss Your Kid

Does distance really make the heart grow fonder? It’s hard to believe it could in today’s high-tech world, especially when it comes to parent-child relationships. After all, tech-savvy moms and dads can easily reach out and touch their smartphone-toting offspring with the press of a single button regardless of how far they stray from the nest. In fact, according to a new study just published in AARP The Magazine, parents aged 47 to 66 admit to communicating with their 20-something children several times a day despite the fact that they don’t live in the same city. The online query, “Parents … Continue reading

Does Your Child Have a Cellphone?

According to the Center on Media and Child Health, 54 percent of 8- to 12-year-olds will have a cell phone in the next three years. So by 2011 more tweens will have cellphones than they will dictionaries, calculators or any other handheld device—-electronic or otherwise. Scary. Is life really unimaginable without these handy devices? For some parents the answer is a wholehearted: “Yes!” A recent survey found that most parents who bought their kids cellphones say they did so for “convenience” and “safety” reasons. In fact, some parents revealed that the allure of GPS tracking capability inspired them to purchase … Continue reading

Travel Tidbits: Chatty Charlie Gets Busted and Parking Violator Finally Pays Up

Let this be a warning to all of you travelers who are obsessed with your cellphones: Airlines mean business when they tell you to shut up. It’s a lesson one Southwest Airlines passenger learned the hard way on Monday. For some reason 50-year-old Joe David Jones refused to get off his cellphone during a flight from Austin to Dallas and he’s now having to pay the price for it. According to police reports, Southwest flight attendants repeatedly asked Jones to hang up his cellphone while the plane was in mid-air, but he refused to comply. When the jet landed at … Continue reading

Cellphones at 35,000 Feet

Does listening to folks yak incessantly on their cellphones in restaurants or on buses drive you mad? Well, consider how you would feel if Johnny Blabber was given the green light to talk all he wanted on his cellphone during a trans-Atlantic flight. It could happen…and sooner than you think. Earlier this week the European Union opened the way for air travelers to use cellphones to talk, text or send e-mails on planes flying throughout Europe’s airspace. According to travel experts, midair cellphone service may be available in a few months on some airlines for passengers using European GSM technology. … Continue reading

New Product: Kajeet, Cellphones for Kids

Seems like cellphone users are getting younger every day. Tyler has been bugging me for the past six months to get him one. I remind him that at 6-years-old he does not need a phone because anyone he needs to call he can call on my cellphone or the house phone. I know many parents are purchasing cellphones as a way to keep track of their kids and with plans dropping in price not to mention pay-as-you-go phones, pretty soon everyone’s going to have a phone. You’ll probably see toddlers on the playground, cellphone in hand, as they cascade down … Continue reading

“Hang Up The Phone, We’re On Vacation”

If I had a dime for each time my sister-in-law spat those words out during our Easter vacation… I’d be rich. My two older brothers are cellphone addicts—they take their phones everywhere. I will admit their addiction grew (somewhat) out of necessity. One is a firefighter and the other is the spokesperson for the county’s Department of Emergency Management. So each carries at least two cellphones at all times. Which, of course, means that during our spring vacation there was nary a moment that went by when one of their phones was not ringing. (And frankly, I couldn’t blame them … Continue reading

Airplanes and Cellphones

Are you addicted to your cellphone? Do you start to tremble when it isn’t on your ear or at the very least somewhere you can see it? Well, then I’m sure you will be very happy to hear that new technology is being introduced next year that will allow you to use your cellphones in mid-air. With that said, we may be looking at a major overhaul in airplane interiors. Beginning with those lighted placards that hang from the airplane’s ceilings. You know, the ones that illuminate “Fasten Seat Belts.” It won’t be long before a new placard will be … Continue reading
