The Christmas Candle – Richard Paul Evans

Today’s Christmas picture book is “The Christmas Candle,” by Richard Paul Evans. A young man named Thomas made his way through the dark night, holding a lantern but that lantern’s candle was all used. He found the village candlemaker and approached the door, pushing aside an old beggar to get through the door. He looked around at all the pretty candles. Some were shaped like angels and fairies. He was glad to find this candle shop – the rest of the town seemed empty. But he didn’t understand why some of the candles were so fancy, and he told the … Continue reading

Stephen Colbert–Public School Teachers’ Hero

Don’t underestimate the power of Stephen Colbert. The Comedy Central star may have lost out on his chance to run for the president of the United States, but his words are still powerful enough to rally the troops. During the hoopla surrounding Colbert’s mock presidential bid the host of Comedy Central’s “The Colbert Report” also asked viewers to give to DonorsChoose.org, which helps fulfill teacher wish lists for books, globes and other classroom materials in schools throughout the country. A South Carolina native, Colbert took time to promote the organization in an effort to help public school teachers and students … Continue reading

Celebrities Lending a Hand

Madonna is putting her money where her mouth is. The adoption advocate is teaming up with Gucci to raise money for orphans in Malawai. The impoverished southern African nation is where the Material Girl and her husband Guy Ritchie met their 2-year-old son David Banda. (The couple has not officially been named the boy’s parents, but he has been living with them since last year.) According to the 49-year-old singer, she will host a star-studded fundraiser – including a dinner, musical performance and party – on February 6, 2008 to open Gucci’s new store on New York’s Fifth Avenue. “I … Continue reading

18 Zoos and Aquariums Worthy of Your Donations

Rounding out the categories for animal-centered organizations worthy of your donations is zoos and aquariums. (Previously the top 79 animal rights, welfare, and service organizations and the top 24 wildlife conservation organizations were listed.) “Top” standings were derived by using ratings generated by Charity Navigator. Any zoo or aquarium that they gave four stars (their highest rating) to meant it passed mustard and made the list. The zoos and aquariums are listed in alphabetical order and are linked to their websites. In cases where the information was readily available, each zoos number of animals and acres is also listed. 1. … Continue reading

24 Wildlife Conservation Organizations Worthy of Your Donations

The other day I listed 79 animal rights, welfare, and service organizations worthy of your donations based on ratings generated by Charity Navigator and the American Institute of Philanthropy. These were organizations that scored either four stars from Charity Navigator (their highest rating) or “A”s from the American Institute of Philanthropy. Using the same methodology, the list below represents the top rated wildlife conservation organizations that you can feel confident are utilizing your donation dollars in the most efficient and effective manner possible. Again, charities are listed in alphabetical order and are linked to their websites, if applicable. 1. African … Continue reading

RS/EQ: “Selfless Service”

Lesson 8 of the Spencer W. Kimball manual for this year’s course of study is entitled “Selfless Service.” We begin, as always, with a short story from President Kimball’s life that illustrates the point. He was flying out of Chicago and noticed a young mother, heavily pregnant, struggling with her two-year-old child. The plane was late, the toddler was tired and cranky, and because she was threatening miscarriage, the mother was not able to pick the child up. President Kimball stepped in and offered to hold the child, giving her a piece of gum. President Kimball later received a letter … Continue reading

79 Animal Rights, Welfare, and Service Organizations Worthy of Your Donations

Using ratings generated by Charity Navigator and the American Institute of Philanthropy, I’ve compiled a list of the top-rated animal rights, welfare, and service-related charities. These are ones that scored either four stars from Charity Navigator (their highest rating) or As from the American Institute of Philanthropy. Charity Navigator and the American Institute of Philanthropy evaluate “the financial health” of non-profit organizations to determine which ones are using their money most effectively. What this means to you is that you can rest assured your donation dollars are being well utilized for the cause they were intended. Charities are listed in … Continue reading

Money Week in Review Oct. 28 – Nov. 3rd

Whenever you see a great price on an item or a gift with purchase, keep in mind that these are advertising methods to help businesses make money. While they can be good for the business, they may not be so good for your pocketbook. In Miriam’s article this week she asks us, just How Much Are You Paying for the Perks? Whether it be a luxury item or a special offer, it is important to ask yourself some of these important questions. We would like to sit back and say money is all about math and numbers. But the reality … Continue reading

More Affordable Pink Products

In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month (and my own mother’s battle with the evil disease) I am continuing to spotlight products whose profits will help educate women about early detection and treatment. In doing so I hope you will be inspired to assist those whom awareness of breast cancer is a 12-month-long commitment—–not just a few weeks during the fall. There are dozens of companies offering pink products during the month of October, but truth be told, some of the items are rather expensive. The following products don’t require rearranging your household budget to afford. Quilted Northern. For every … Continue reading

DonateYourCalories.com

Well, this is just a fantastic idea if you ask me! Terry Dunkle, founder and CEO of Diet Power, Inc. has launched www.DonateYourCalories.com. This website will take into consideration your age, height, current weight, goal weight and target date and tell you how much money you will save every month by cutting your calories to reach your goal. Of course, the website is DonateYourCalories.com, not SaveYourCalories.com. Rather than suggesting that you save that money for Mexican vacation, they suggest a charity that will feed hungry children. The whole idea is to use the money you would spend to overeat on … Continue reading
