Change What You Can

We may not be always able to change our circumstances but we can change the way we view them. We can view life as hard and a drag, or we change our attitude to look for the blessings and positives in each day. While we were waiting for our move down to the South Coast, we were unable to change our circumstances. But we could change our attitude. Instead of resenting every moment of the delay, we used the time to draw closer to God and try to discover what the Lord wanted to teach us through the experience. It … Continue reading

Choosing Flowers with the Color Wheel

Whether you are planning a window box or a garden, knowing which colors of flowers go together and what their impact will be is an important planning step. You don’t want your flowers to clash, overpower or get washed out. And different colors can convey different moods and looks. Using the color wheel, as well as your own common sense can help you create a beautiful display. Before we get into the color wheel, let’s talk about the color white. White isn’t on the color wheel, since it is a neutral color and will compliment any others. You can use … Continue reading

Putting Anger Aside in a Hurtful Situation

I love the way when I’m writing about a topic, God provides an opportunity for me to put into practice what I am writing about. This week I found myself hurt and upset about a decision made by someone else, which affected me. When I told my husband what had happened and how I was feeling, about this incident involving another person in the community, he listened to me and then he played devil’s advocate.‘Suppose it wasn’t quite like you’re thinking. Maybe it was just a lack of communication between you and the other person,’ he said. He pointed out … Continue reading

How To Deal With Anger

Yesterday we looked at whether anger is a sin. I said it was not – or not always. But it can be, if we let that anger fester and do not deal with it appropriately. It’s what we do with that anger that’s important. One of our families.com members pointed out that not dealing with anger can cause other problems. Stress, depression, ulcers, heart problems, emotional and mental problems among other things could all fit into that category. So what can we do as Christians about inappropriate anger? The bible tells us ‘the Lord is ‘slow to anger and abounding … Continue reading

We Have a Choice in How We Interpret Things

I wrote earlier today about how our bodies can sometimes have minds of their own (so to speak) and that even if we are trying to stay focused on work, we can have physical reactions and responses to stresses and realities in the work place. As home business owners, we really do have a great deal of control over our work life, but we might forget that we also get to choose how we interpret the things that happen (what people say and do, for example) in the every day workings of our businesses. I am not talking about burying … Continue reading

How Can Reading a Psalm Help You?

Let me give you some ideas of how reading a psalm can sharpen and challenge our thinking. And suggest how to apply it to your life. This morning I read Psalm 57. In verse 1 David pleads with God to be gracious. Why? Because his soul ‘takes refuge’ in God. Is God my place of refuge and the One I run to when trouble comes? Is he yours? Notice David’s confidence in verse 2. He knows exactly where to turn and why to go there. He has confidence in God’s ability to undertake for him. David knew God ‘accomplishes all … Continue reading

There is a Great Deal of Choice in Home Business Operations

It is easy to fall into the trap of feeling like things are happening TO you or that you are just reacting to the external forces. Feeling strong, capable, and productive in your home business, however, requires that you acknowledge and take advantage of all of the opportunities for decision-making and that you realize how much choice you really do have in your business operations. Instead of feeling like a rowboat battered by the storms, you probably have a strong motor that you do not even know about… Many of us know that choice is one of the key elements … Continue reading

Is Fear Holding You Back?

Fear can stop us doing those things we know we should do. On Australia Day, 31 people in the Shoalhaven area committed to becoming Australian citizens. One person only took a couple of months to make that decision. Another man admitted it took him 62 years to decide to become an Australian citizen. One could only assume it was a fear of committing himself and changing his allegiance. Maybe you are in a similar position, with regard to the Lord? You’re afraid of committing yourself. You’ve heard the gospel message. You’ve felt the tug of Jesus on your heart prompting … Continue reading

My Country

Today, January 26th as it is already in our part of the world under the Southern Cross, is Australia Day. Our branch of the Sing Australia choir sang at Australia Day celebrations at Sussex Inlet. One the whole Aussies are a laid-back bunch and not given to huge displays of patriotism unless it’s Davis Cup or some other sporting event, although across the road in our neighbor’s yard is an Australian flag which flies all year round. Others only take to sporting a flag on this special day. But this is Australia Day, more than just a public holiday, it … Continue reading

Politics and the LDS Church

I think that it is important to address the church and politics. Mitt Romney, who is running for president, is LDS. This has brought a lot of media attention to the church. A lot of the attention has been good since it has allowed the church and its members to address common misconceptions. One thing that it is important to realize is that the church is neutral when it comes to politics. The LDS church does not promote specific candidates. In fact each election period, each bishop will read a letter, which states the fact that the church is neutral … Continue reading
