Choosing Who You Work With

While I appreciate the autonomy of working at my home business, I know that I don’t always have as much say and control as I’d like to imagine. One element I do appreciate, however, is that I really do get to choose who I work with. I am in a sort of business where I do not have to take every offer, client and opportunity that comes along. Additionally, this feels very different than working for a company where a person has to work with whoever the company says! I am the company and I get to decide who I … Continue reading

Torn Between Two Worlds

When our children are younger, we single parents can have a bit more control over custody and visitation arrangements. During the holidays, many of us have very definite, written, court documents that state who will go where and for how long. As children get older, however, and start into adulthood–they no longer have someone making those decisions and choices for them and have to start making them on their own. It can be very difficult and painful for a child who feels like she is torn between two (or more) different worlds. I wrote earlier in the holiday season about … Continue reading

Gospel Doctrine: Release Barabbas

When Pontius told the Jews that he found no fault in Jesus, he sought to release the Savior as a free man. Instead, the angry mob insisted that the murderer, Barabbas, be instead released. When asked what to do with the Lord and Savior, the crowd cried out that He should be crucified. The Jewish people chose a man of the world over a man of God. When Pontius gave them a second chance, they cried out again for the convicted criminal rather than the man free of all sin. They embraced the world rather than the Lord. Repeatedly through … Continue reading

Is Homeschooling a Right or a Privilege?

I had a bad EBay experience today where I purchased a power cord and when I got it, was not happy. The seller was dismissive about it. He then demanded positive feedback. I replied that I would not give feedback at all. You see, I told him, feedback is a privilege to be earned, not a right. Let us just say that this is where it got ugly. So what does my EBay experience have to do with homeschooling? Well I saw an interesting correlation. (I am a homeschool blogger; I would see a correlation in a ham sandwich) There … Continue reading

Freedom of Choice

With all the chaos, hunger, disease and destruction in the world, if God loves His children so much, why doesn’t He spare them? Why would a loving God allow anyone to suffer? To be honest with you, I really don’t know for sure. I believe as much as we are absorbed in this world, it is only a sliver of our “life”. Perhaps God is more concerned with where our hearts are during times of trial and tragedy than the pain we endure? I know before Adam and Eve committed the first sin, they’d been warned by God. The choices … Continue reading

We Know It’s Wrong, So Why do we do It?

Why do we sin when we know how destructive it can be in our lives? I mean, we’ve been given free will and can choose not to sin, right? Mankind wasn’t able to complete even one generation without sinning. Adam and Eve, even while walking and talking with the Lord disobeyed God by eating of the only tree they were instructed not to. So how did they come to that decision? I believe the answer is temptation and justification. The serpent, which was Satan, caused Eve to question God’s authority, and then told her she would not die if she … Continue reading

Radical Feminism Takes on the “Mommy Bunch”

Apparently, the “Mommy Wars” aren’t really winding down, at least not for some. In her book, Get to Work: A Manifesto for Women of the World, Linda Hirshman berates everyone from “watered down” feminists to the “mommy bunch.” Her hardcore approach to feminism (or feminazism) declares that feminism didn’t fail because it was too radical but because it wasn’t radical enough. Hirshman denounces those who call themselves feminists yet still agree that women should make whichever choices they feel are best for their own lives. Staying home and taking care of home, husband, and kids, is in her opinion, not … Continue reading

The Brothers — Chris Stewart

Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints believe that we existed in Heaven before we came to earth, as spirits waiting to take on physical bodies. We believe that we had the same personalities then that we do now, and that when we die, those personalities go with us into the next life. This is one of the many beliefs author Chris Stewart explores in his ground-breaking novel “The Brothers,” the prologue to the series “The Great and the Terrible.” The novel focuses on the lives of four spirits: Samuel, Ammon, Luke and Elizabeth, who live together … Continue reading

Consulting With God First

Each day gives a new series of choices. We can come to decisions based on past experiences of our own or others’, we can weigh out the pros and cons of different choices, and we can go with our gut. Most of the daily decisions don’t necessarily have lasting impacts on our lives. For example; will we eat now or in an hour? Will we have Italian food or Mexican food? Will I wear the red dress or the black dress (though if you are concerned about modesty, maybe you should take further consideration)? I’m not convinced that God is … Continue reading
