Staging Your House for Less

Something about spring makes me start watching all of those home shows. You know the ones where couples and sometimes singles look for the perfect house, fix up and put their homes on the market or just do some renovations. Maybe it is because spring is the most popular time of the year to list a house and get a buyer. While the housing market has promise of turning around, there is still quite a lot of “stock,” houses on the market. This means that in order to make yours sell, it needs to shine. One thing that helps house … Continue reading

Cleaning the Dishwasher

I do a pretty good job keeping up with my schedule in which I deep clean the appliances in my kitchen. Most of us tend to think about the stove and refrigerator. But if you have a dishwasher, this should be added to your list of deep cleaning every three or six months. Think about it this way. It’s an appliance used every day. It cleans dirty dishes. Still not getting the picture? That’s probably because you assume since it is an appliance that cleans, it doesn’t require cleaning. Not true. You might compare it to your teeth. You can … Continue reading

Thinking about Becoming Minimalist

As our daily lives seem to be becoming more and more hectic, with so much to do and to take care of, I’ve been seriously considering becoming a minimalist. I’m inspired by photos of folks who can fit their entire belongings in just a small part of one room, although stacked up, and others who say that practicing minimalism leaves them free to enjoy the more important things and to enjoy life. I can probably get my husband on board–at least on the surface. There is the fact that he has these huge ancient speakers and an old Apple Newton … Continue reading

Taking Advantage of a Springlike Day

It has been unseasonably warm here lately. Today I think the high was 56, it’s February in Utah but please don’t tell old man winter, I’m ok with him skipping us this year. It was so warm today that I got a bit of a spring cleaning bug. Now I know this won’t last but I do want to enjoy it while I can. There are several things that I can do when the weather is nice that just makes my home seem that much cleaner. It is nice to have these little things done when it gets cold again, … Continue reading

Cleaning For Company

It’s time for holiday guests. As much as I would like my house to be spotless when my guests arrive I know that working full time makes a spotless house something of a fantasy. Instead I’ve learned to make it good enough. If you are having company that will sit in the living room and visit, is it really necessary to wipe down the refrigerator shelves? I think not. Here is my quickie list to get ready for company when I don’t have time to deep clean. *Shut the doors to all rooms and closets your guests will not see. … Continue reading

Cleaning, Sixty Seconds At A Time

Housework seems to take forever, but if you can do some 60 second chores when you have time, things will go much smoother. There are so many times I’m put on hold when I call someone, or I’m waiting to leave or waiting for someone to show up or waiting for the oven timer to go off. By taking advantage of those tiny little minutes you can cut down on the hours you spend cleaning. In sixty seconds you can: • Clean a mirror • Empty the bathroom trash • Change the towels in the bathroom • Wipe fingerprints off … Continue reading

Creating a Quarterly Chore List

So far I have blogged about creating a daily, weekly and monthly chore list. Now we are going to be talking about creating a quarterly chore list. Hopefully what you will find is that you are really starting to get a hold of your housekeeping and discovering an easy way to stay on top of things. This is really the best way to organize your housekeeping. Housekeeping is something that can easily overwhelm us. But when you have it mapped out and you enlist the help of others, it doesn’t have to be such a negative thing. So let’s consider … Continue reading

Creating a Daily Chore List

Some people find housekeeping therapeutic and others would like to avoid it at any cost. I tend to be one of those that equate it to therapy because I feel so much better when things are cleaned up and put away. But what has really helped is my daily chore list. I know that some people like to do their chores whenever they get to them, or an entire evening may be set aside. Some people take advantage of the weekend and use that as a time to catch up. Personally, I don’t like to spend hours of my time … Continue reading

The Gift of Professional Cleaning

Forget the Dyson; I now have a new Christmas wish gift-—a maid. My BFF got the best Christmas present yesterday: six months’ worth of professional housecleaning services. She is entitled to five regular cleanings and one heavy seasonal cleaning, which includes: Dusting corners, ceilings, and walls, including photo frames and artwork Cleaning windows, window screens, and window treatments Scrubbing interiors and exteriors of kitchen cupboards and drawers Cleaning ceiling fans, light fixtures, and vents Cleaning the oven, microwave, and dishwasher Shampooing rugs, carpets, and upholstery Talk about the gift that keeps on giving. I have never dreamed of asking for … Continue reading

Diary of a Cat Care B&B: Contagious Cautions

Not all boarding facilities are equipped to handle guests (feline or otherwise) with health issues. Because we’re owned by and attached to a veterinarian’s office, the staff at the cats-only boarding facility is trained to do some unusual things. We administer oral medications (pills and liquids), topical medications (like creams applied to the inside of the ear), injections (like insulin for diabetic kitties), and even subcutaneous fluids (for guests who are dehydrated). But sometimes, we get a guest with a serious health issue that could possibly be contagious to other guests. We work very hard to ensure that the ill … Continue reading
