The Frugal Washing Machine

The way you load and set your washer can save you at least 50 percent a load. I love writing about ways to save money on laundry, because it is just one of those expenses that can’t be avoided. I do know people who do everything they can to avoid doing laundry, from airing out their clothing instead of washing it between times it is worn (can be frugal) to purchasing more clothing (probably not frugal, although it can be). Although I can do without many things in an effort to be frugal, I just can’t skimp on having clean … Continue reading

The Children’s Place Outlet – $10 off $30

Every parent of a small child knows that kids’ clothes are way overpriced! That’s especially true for those items that don’t hold up to normal kid wear. This is one place that buying cheaper isn’t necessarily better (did I just write that?). If you’re lucky enough to find garage sale clothes that fit your kids, fantastic! Or maybe you know someone whose children are a little older than yours and they hand them all down to you. When Jenna was small, we had friends whose daughter was two sizes larger than she was. It was great to get Minerva’s surprise … Continue reading

Men’s Fashion Week

Just days after the death of legendary fashion designer Gianfranco Ferre his colleagues and fans gathered to pay tribute to him in Italy during men’s fashion week. A teary-eyed crowd gave a standing ovation to pay honor to the late designer at the presentation of his summer menswear collection. The show took place exactly a week after the 62-year old designer died of a brain hemorrhage in a Milan hospital. Ferre’s associates say the summer 2008 collection draws its inspiration from “the sea, from color scheme to fabrics shimmering like sun’s reflection on water.” The designer, known as the “architect” … Continue reading

Fashion Files: So Long Saggy Pants, Hello Cucumber Cool

In a previous blog I gave you a few reasons why perpetuating the baggy pants fashion trend could lead to trouble. Now one Louisiana lawmaker is making it a crime (and not just with the fashion police) to wear baggy britches around town. The mayor of Delcambre, Louisiana said he would sign an ordinance the town council approved this week setting penalties of up to six months in jail and a $500 fine for anyone who is caught “wearing pants that reveal undergarments or certain parts of the body.” The mayor told news reporters that while he has nothing against … Continue reading

Cheap Celebrity Fashions

Now we’re talking! In a previous blog I discussed how franchise giants such as Target and the Gap are selling high fashion apparel at affordable prices. Well, I may have to redefine my definition of “affordable” thanks in large part to Sarah Jessica Parker. The actress and fashionista is blowing the lid off of celebrity-branded fashion with a new clothing line that is priced under $20. Now that’s what I call affordable. Parker has partnered with Steve & Barry’s (best known for its inexpensive college apparel) to create sensibly priced (see cheap) clothing that is actually good looking. The actress … Continue reading

MyTwin Up to 85% Off

MyTwin is a great concept. You custom order dolls that match your little girls’ characteristics. So if that black haired, tanned skin, green-eyed doll seems impossible to find, have it made instead. Choose from five different skin tones and nine different hair colors. Then upload a picture of your princess, and they’ll custom paint her eyebrows, cheeks, and lips. Yes, even her freckles or her beauty mark. Then they style the doll’s hair to match the photo. It’s not cheap. With taxes and shipping, it comes to about $150. However, it’s probably the last doll you will buy. We have … Continue reading

Affordable Designer Duds… At Target?

Have you been to Target or the Gap recently? Designer names like Stella McCartney, Roland Mouret, and Proenza Schouler are proudly displayed over racks of hip outfits made from cashmere, silk and other high-end materials. It’s a rare day when I stray from the housewares or the children’s sections of Target over to women’s apparel, so when I saw the designer duds hanging in the aisles there I was shocked. The prices were shocking too. Designers, whose work would normally sell for hundreds of dollars, if not thousands, are now being sold at Target and the Gap for just $50 … Continue reading

Knowing when to shop for the best deals, is an important part of the frugal living lifestyle. If you know, in advance, that something around your home, is coming up on needing a replacement, shop for it during the proper month and you can save a lot of money! After contacting several department stores, and working with a human resources manager of a large … Continue reading

Fashion Forward: Going Organic

When you see the term “organic” do you instantly think of vegetables and poultry? Don’t worry; you aren’t alone. It took me a while to get used to seeing the word used on labels of non-edible products—-from lotions to cosmetics and clothing—-these days it’s all about being “organic.” (In our town we have a store that has an entire section devoted to “eco-friendly” products.) In most cases if a product is labeled “organic” you can assume that it was manufactured in a way that lessens the impact on the environment. For some people buying organic groceries isn’t enough. My adult … Continue reading

Cute Adult Rugby Shirt for $3.99 at The Children’s Place

Did you know that The Children’s Place also sells adult clothes? Well, a few pieces, anyway. These rugby shirts came out in sizes for the whole family. The idea was for matching outfits. Apparently, they sold more children’s than adults because the adult ones have been marked way down to only $3.99 from $24.50. My favorite one is the one that’s pictured here. It reminds me of Joseph’s coat of many colors! You can get a matching or contrasting scarf for another $1.99. They still have sizes left in children’s and adults, so for less than $8 you can be … Continue reading
