How Did I Become the “Hang Out” House?

We are not the Huxtables or the Brady Bunch—that is clear to anyone. Many of you who read these blogs probably have a pretty good idea of the bustling, ordinary-yet-non-traditional, single mom led family that I’ve got going here. I work, a lot, and I definitely don’t see myself as the sweet, caregiving-focused, maternal sort. We don’t live in a mansion with an ever-over-stocked pantry either. So, I’m having a hard time figuring out why there are usually 2-3 extra mouths to feed and extra pairs of shoes by my front door? Now, I’m not really complaining, I just always … Continue reading

Getting Too Comfy?

Does God really want us to be comfortable? If someone had asked me years ago I would have told them yes because I believed God wanted us to be happy and He wants good for our lives. I know now the reality about being too comfortable in our walk and the destruction it can be in our lives. As long as we are living in this sin filled world we will not arrive at perfection. This does not mean we shouldn’t make great efforts to do better and be better though. God deserves nothing less than the best we have … Continue reading

What Says “Comfort” for Your Family?

Comfort doesn’t have to be just about “comfort food”—you may be surprised if you take a poll at your house what kind of homey touches actually say and mean “comfort” to your family. Recently, over a late Sunday morning breakfast, my kids and I were talking about what THEY thought were the details and realities of our home environment that said “comfort”… I learned that smells and scents matter—the smell of sautéed garlic and onions, or the smell of cinnamon or something baking are all smells my kids love and that make them feel that they are “home.” Too much … Continue reading

The Most Popular Room in the House

The most popular room in our house is hands down the kitchen—it hasn’t always been this way, of course, I can remember when the play room and the family room were inhabited far more than anywhere else. But, now, we tend to cross paths, congregate and do most of our living, communicating and arguing in the kitchen. I used to wonder what was wrong with our little family since in movies and stories and general family mythology—everything good happened in the kitchen. Now that my kids are nearly grown people, I find that the kitchen has become the hot-spot for … Continue reading

Home and Family: Grief

It’s good to have our families around us when we’re hurting. Having a strong support system in place is important and can be an incredible source of comfort. While we don’t want to burden our children with problems or details, children can be very perceptive and one of the most wonderful sources of healing. Today, my dad would have been 67. It’s the second birthday he’s missed. Last year, I did pretty well, in part, because I had really tried to prepare myself for the date. I wanted to be strong for my brother. I was sad, but I was … Continue reading

He speaks particularly of the ache that he has for his wife, who passed on not very long ago. He goes on to say that this has caused him to think of eternal things. Elder Wirthlin then goes on to describe the blackest Friday in history: the day of Christ’s crucifixion. He talks about the devastation those that loved Christ felt. He also talks about … Continue reading

Why Does Life have to be so Complicated?

Ours is a blended family, although most people would never realize it unless they asked. My husband has been Dad to my oldest daughter since just before she turned four years old. She’s now 16. We’ve been down some bumpy roads, and in fact at times, it feels like a roller coaster. Dealing with her grandparents on the other side has been an exercise in frustration, yet she has managed to maintain a relationship with them. I’m glad for that, but it has been an ongoing struggle. Her grandmother has been very ill, and lost her battle with cancer. My … Continue reading
