A Lesson in Product Safety Recalls

Graco, a popular baby brand that sells “big ticket” items like strollers and cribs, recently recalled 100,000 high chairs. The problem is that the high chairs can collapse if they are not fully opened and locked from the storage position. They received 18 complaints of the chair collapsing and one child suffered a minor injury due to being in the chair while it collapsed. Consumer Reports Opens Mouth and Inserts Foot

Earlier this month, consumer reports circulated a widely published study that tested twelve popular brands of infant car seats and reported that all of them “disastrously failed.” One Consumer Reports reporter says that, “The study showed that adults would be better protected than the infants who would be riding in those same cars.” I don’t know about you, but reading those statements sends a chill up my spine. I have five kids in car seats. Granted, they’re not in infant seats anymore, but I don’t care. It’s unsettling. Photography in the News This Week

We start this week with some more photography in the news. Engineers at Georgia Tech have come up with an interesting digital camera-neutralizing prototype that was created mainly to thwart those who would use a digital video camera to videotape and then resell movies. Movie piracy is a $3 billion dollar per year problem right now, and to prevent it from growing, the prototype uses sensors, lights, and a computer, to scan for, find and then neutralize digital cameras.
