Island Hopping: Nantucket

I grew up on an island and I would be a rich woman today if I could have collected a dime from every person who uttered these words to me over the last three decades: “Hawaii is a great place to visit, but I sure couldn’t afford to live here.” I have a feeling that residents of Nantucket get a lot of the same. The only difference is that most of them are already rich. It’s true; statistics show that most of the island’s residents are second-homeowners who spend the peak summer season in their multi-million dollar oceanfront pads. If … Continue reading

Smile Detection Technology

The ability to electronically detect someone’s smile has been around for a little while. Lat year, Sony unveiled its Smile Shutter features on some cameras, and other manufactures, such as Fuji, offer face (not smile) detection technology on their cameras. And now there is another use for smile and face detection technology–medical use. These technologies analyze different features of a face, from the curving lips, cheekbones that are high, squinting eyes, etc., to determine when someone is smiling. What is the Smile Shutter Feature? With the Smile Shutter feature on selected Sony digital cameras, such as the Cyber-shot DSC-T200, the … Continue reading

The Media and Your Money

Most people do not realize the great impact the media has on money and society. Perception plays a huge role in the value of money and financial systems. The media (at least in the United States) often controls our perceptions, and through those, our money. Financial systems like the economy, home values and the stock market are not based in reality. There is no actual value of a house or true stock price. The price is determined by people’s perception of the value. How is that perception developed? Through what people read and hear. All it takes is one negative … Continue reading

The Magic Molecule

Wouldn’t it be great if we could just shut off our body’s need to eat? Researchers from St Vincent’s Hospital in Australia have some fantastic news for the obese. In recent experiments on mice, they have found a molecule that causes dramatic weight loss and its antidote that causes weight gain. In a word: they have found the holy grail of the overweight. (Insert bright light and singing angels here.) Apparently, patients in advanced stages of cancer will lose interest in food and suffer from malnutrition. In researching this issue in order to eliminate malnutrition in cancer patients they’ve stumbled … Continue reading

Don’t Lose Track of What is Going On Out in the World

One of the realities of running a home business is that we can become somewhat isolated. By being tucked away in our homes for both family life and obligations and our work, we might not be getting out there for business lunches or even the ordinary interaction with coworkers and colleagues. If we don’t make an effort to read trade publications or even the local or regional newspaper, we can lose track of what is going on out there in the “real” world… Some home business owners find that belonging to web communities or list serves helps to keep them … Continue reading

The Week

Around here we don’t have a lot of time to stay current on the news. About a year ago my husband subscribed to weekly news magazine The Week. This news magazine bills itself at being “the best of the U.S. and International media” as well as being “all you need to know about everything that matters.” My husband likes that the larger articles give more than one side to a story. He likes that it covers all the current news topics in condensed form, and that it covers national and national news. You can read The Week in less time … Continue reading

iPhone Customer Gets A 300-Page Bill in A Box

Imagine if your phone bill was so large that it had to come in a box. That is just what happened to iPhone customer Justine Ezarik, of Pittsburgh, Pa. Her 300-page iPhone bill was sent to her in a large cardboard box that cost AT&T $10 just to mail. AT&T is the sole service provider for the iPhone in the United States. Lest you think that Ezarik rang up a million dollar phone bill, well let me tell you that wasn’t the case. The bill actually amounted to about $275, more than an average bill, perhaps, but hardly worthy of … Continue reading
