Country Crooner Lending a Hand

Honestly, I probably would have skipped right over this next story had it not been for the fact that my 92-year-old stroke victim grandmother was placed in an assisted living facility last year. Touring senior care facilities trying to find just the right place for your loved ones gives you new respect for the whole nursing facility industry. It made me wonder if award-winning country singer Martina McBride ever had to find a facility to place one of her family members in. After all, it’s not everyday that a celebrity volunteers to assist aging members of the music industry by … Continue reading

New Release from Lee Ann Womack

With an interesting last name like “Womack,” a person might be tempted to go in for something a little more traditional. Either that, or be tempted to become one of a kind. That’s what country singer Lee Ann Womack has done. Although her sound is somewhat similar to other lady country singers of this era, her persona is all her own. I remember seeing her for the first time on a celebrity version of “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire.” She wasn’t the brightest bulb on the Christmas tree, but neither did she posture or try to make herself look … Continue reading

Garth Brooks’ Active Retirement

Perhaps Garth Brooks’ definition of retirement is not the same as mine. I think of retirement as a time to lounge around on tropical islands (with no time pieces in sight) sipping on fruity libations and catching up on some serious zzz’s. Brooks meanwhile is officially retired and he’s keeping the work schedule of a half dozen entertainers. This weekend the country music star took to the stage for five hours to play five concerts at the Staples Center in Los Angeles in front of nearly 100,000 people. Not exactly what I would call retirement. Brooks says he interrupted his … Continue reading

New Gigs For Jennifer and Jessica

JENNIFER HUDSON How do you follow up an Oscar-winning performance that made you the talk of Hollywood? If you are Jennifer Hudson you hook up with Sarah Jessica Parker and sign on to appear in “Sex and the City: The Movie.” The “Dreamgirls” stand out has just signed on to play the assistant to Parker’s designer clad, shoe-obsessed character Carrie Bradshaw. According to Variety, the 25-year-old singer-actress is currently in final negotiations with movie producers, but should be on set when filming gets underway in New York next week. In addition to Parker and Hudson, Kim Cattrall, Kristin Davis, Cynthia … Continue reading

Country Star vs. Bear—The Outcome

A few months ago I blogged about Troy Lee Gentry being charged with falsely registering a captive bear as being killed in the wild. Much to my surprise the charge came with a hefty penalty and I was curious to see how the popular country singer would respond. Turns out Gentry decided to plead guilty to the charges. Actually, he decided to accept a plea deal offered by federal prosecutors. According to news reports, under the plea, the 39-year-old singer will pay a $15,000 fine, give up hunting, fishing and trapping in Minnesota for five years, and forfeit both the … Continue reading

Country Singer vs. Bear

Popular country crooner Troy Lee Gentry (of the singing duo Montgomery Gentry) has been accused of killing a tame black bear. What’s more, he could go to prison for doing so. It’s a bizarre story (well, I think so anyway): Federal officials allege that Gentry purchased a black bear named Cubby for just under $5000 from a wildlife photographer and hunting guide then killed it with a bow and arrow in an enclosed pen on the photographer’s property in October 2004. Now, nearly two years later, Gentry is facing charges in federal court for tagging the bear. The government maintains … Continue reading
