Creating Custom Curtains from Store Bought

Everyone wants that custom curtain look, but the cost of custom curtains can be quite prohibitive. But what do you do when your home has windows that don’t fit store bought curtains? Well, you need to do a bit of adustment. Many new homes for example, boast soaring ceilings, but standard curtian sizes have not caught up to the new lenghts. In cases, you can avoid the high cost of customization by adding more length to the curtian. I like to take the curtain panel to the fabric store and peruse the designer fabric for something that coordinates with it. … Continue reading

Cleaning Curtains

Spring time is a great time to start thinking about your curtains. Most of the time, curtains tend to just hang there, ignored in the normal household cleaning. But curtains do need to be cleaned on a regular basis. Here is how to clean your curtains. Regular fabric curtains can usually just be thrown in the washing machine on gentle. You can hang them to dry or dry them in the dryer on low. If you do use a dryer, be sure to remove the curtains immediately and rehang, otherwise you may have to iron them first. Dressing A Daughter’s Room 5

When we last left off, I was talking about the great fabrics that I poked through at an Amish-owned fabric shop in Lancaster, Pa. I was looking for the perfect fabric for my little girl’s room. I wanted something that was current, fresh, fun and would grow with my daughter as she did. To remind you, the fabric choices were: a delicate variegated pink rose pattern, pink outlined flowers on a white background and its opposite white outlines flowers on a pink background, a thin candy strip with two different pink stripes and a white stripe, and an an oddball, … Continue reading

Dressing a Daughter’s Room

We had quite an adventure this past weekend. Now that Molly’s room is almost finished, we just need to address the windows, or should I say “dress” the windows. We also have a closet door to dress as well. Here is what we have been doing and where we found a way to make custom curtains when I don’t yet sew. Getting Molly’s room ready has been a long process that was frequently interrupted by other house projects that took priority, such as new flooring in the family room, felling trees in the yard, and fixing plumbing leaks. We can … Continue reading

Frugal Curtain Tiebacks

Here is a frugal (cheap) way to get some nice new metal tie backs for you curtains at bout 1/12th of the cost. We’ve finally given up on being able to redesign our living room and dining room this year and have started to put the old existing curtains back up on the windows. To be honest, they really aren’t bad curtains, although they don’t exactly match with the colors on the respective walls. One thing that is hard to get used to is having curtains on these windows at all. That is because we spent the entire summer without … Continue reading

Lighter Fare: Window Treatments

In previous articles on lightening up for spring and summer, window treatments were mentioned. Removing heavy drapes and curtains or simply opening them up and adding sheers were some of the recommended changes but if you would like more ideas, read on. If you want to let the sunshine in but have concerns regarding privacy, even during certain hours, consider adding blinds, shades, or matchstick shades to close when privacy is needed. When you want to open the windows or simply let more light in, retract the shades or blinds and use lightweight treatments such as sheers, valances, or window … Continue reading
