CDC Warns Against Leafy Greens, Poultry, and Dairy

It sounds crazy, but the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued a statement about leafy greens, poultry, and dairy after a recent study and it ain’t good. For a ten-year period, between 1998 and 2008, leafy green such as kale, lettuce, and spinach were the leading causes of food-borne illnesses in the United States.  But, it was dairy products that lead to the most hospitalizations.  And, poultry – well, that led to the most deaths. Now, the CDC didn’t release this info to scare you (although it did me!).  Patricia Griffin, a food-borne disease expert with the … Continue reading

Dairy Foods and Weight Loss

Do you remember those print ads in the magazines that show a glass of milk with an hourglass figure? The implication is that drinking milk can help you to lose weight and be fit. In fact, there is another study that has found this link to be true. (There are also other studies that have shown unclear results.) Upping your dairy intake may help you to lose weight. The most recent study was done at Curtin University in Perth, Australia. For 12 weeks, researchers followed participants who upped their dairy intake from three to five servings a day. Those who … Continue reading

Warm Milk May Not Trigger Milk Allergy

A study from Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York looked at children with milk allergies. One hundred children with milk allergies participated in the study. In the first phase of the study, the children were given baked goods (muffins and waffles) that contained milk protein that had been heated. If the child tolerated the baked goods, he or she was given unheated milk. If the child could not tolerate the unheated milk, he or she was fed baked goods that contained milk protein for three months and then re-evaluated. In the first phase of the study, 68 out … Continue reading

Health Food Store DOs and DON’Ts

Across America you can find more than thirty-five thousand health food stores. But just because something is available at the health food store doesn’t mean it’s better than what is in your regular grocery store. Health food store DOs: Do take advantage of the dairy and nondairy selections to get plenty of calcium in your diet. You’ll find the usual milk and yogurt and cheeses that you’re used to from the usual grocery store, plus more exotic or unusual offerings like soy and rice-based dairy products and yogurt made from sheep’s or goat’s milk. Do investigate (and try) vegetarian meats … Continue reading

Dairy-licious and Healthy?

I’m stuffed. Yesterday our playgroup attended an ice cream social at a local park (our city hosts several of these events throughout the summer). Ice cream treats for 25 cents each. Now that’s a real treat. Of course, my 3-year-old daughter wanted one of everything: Fudgesicles, Drumsticks, Creamsicles, Choco-Tacos, ice cream sandwiches… there had to have been more than a dozen types of ice cream treats there. I told her she could pick two of her favorites. Big mistake. Long story short—her eyes turned out to be bigger than her stomach and I ended up downing three ice cream treats. … Continue reading

Best Buys for June

Take advantage of this month’s sales and deals. Every month has its own set of items that are discounted or go on sale. If you know when to buy, you can save big. With June comes summer, and the stores are happy to oblige with discounts and sales on summer fashions. Actually, the stores were ready with their summer stock months ago, but now they are getting desperate to being in fall fashions, so the summer fashions are offered at great prices. I’m looking forward to doing a little shopping for summer clothes, especially since we have been spending more … Continue reading

Is This A Healthy Diet?

We all know eating healthy foods is a good way to stay in peak form. But, some people stray from a healthy diet because they don’t necessarily enjoy eating items considered “good for you” foods. (Tofutti anyone?) The other day I was listening to a radio show that featured a dietician who claimed that “good mood” foods were just as important for people as “good for you” foods. She said these so-called “good mood” foods enable you to go from down in the dumps to the top of your game in just a few bites. So, what are “good mood” … Continue reading

The Dairy Diet

A great source of calcium, vitamins and minerals is dairy foods. While some of us are lactose intolerant, many of us are not. Dairy is a fundamental food source, not to mention a good one. We can still enjoy dairy products in our life. The important key to enjoying what we love is to seek out lower fat versions of it. For example, powdered milk has a ton of calcium, yet there is no fat. You will also find that powdered milks has a lot less in the way of germs that pasteurized milk does. In Asia and many other … Continue reading
