Introduction: “Devotions of” Series

I want to start a new series entitled “Devotions of . . .” over different topics in the Bible, different Biblical concepts, and different struggles we all deal with in our lives. In this series I want to share with you some key passages in the Bible dealing with the topic at hand. I also plan to share my thoughts on the topic. I will also give you tips on how to do further study on the topic by sharing such things as other relevant words you might look up in a concordance which relate to the topic. While you … Continue reading

What Can We Learn from Other’s Marriages?

What have you learned from other marriages around you? We can all learn from other relationships, whether that means learning what to do or what not to do. My grandparents were married for 69 years before they were separated by the death of my grandmother. Were they always happy? No, to be honest, they weren’t. They were however there for each no matter what. They faced a lot of hard times together, but remained strong and faithful. My grandmother became rather difficult in her later years, due to ill health, but my grandfather always did whatever he could to care … Continue reading

Focusing on Family

I truly believe that one of the areas in which America is failing the most is with the family. Families are becoming less and less important in today’s society. American culture teaches that being out in the world is so much more important than being with one’s family. Life in America focuses on education, work, sports, television, music, movies, cars, and money, just to name a few things. While none of the things I just mentioned are bad or evil, they often grab one’s focus in life over more important things, such as family. Spending time together as a family … Continue reading

Declare Your Devotion

I have been talking about intimacy a great deal and how communication and constant checks and rechecks are a part of maintaining your intimacy with your spouse. Another facet of maintaining intimacy is declaring your devotion. Over and over and over again. For example, I kept track one day out of sheer curiosity – my daughter said “I love you” to me 28 times in one day. That’s more than twice per hour when you consider she’s only awake for about 12 hours of the day. She declares her love on a regular and consistent basis. I understand her need … Continue reading

Adult Bible Studies and Devotionals

Growing up I attended many Bible studies with my parents. These Bible studies consisted of several families who got together every few weeks for a study of a particular book of the Bible. As a younger child I would play with the other children during these gatherings, but as I grew up I started participating in the discussions. As a child I saw these Bible studies as an opportunity to hang out with my friends and nothing more; however, looking back now I appreciate the example that my parents set for me. My parents not only taught me about a … Continue reading

Starting Your Own Personal Bible Study: Part 4

Read Part 1 Read Part 2 Read Part 3 So you have figured out what type of Bible study you want to do, where to start, and even how to study, but how much should you study? The amount of time I spend on my personal Bible study varies from day to day. If I am doing a type of study where I have determined that I am reading a certain number of chapters, then my study lasts as long as it takes to get through the material, usually no more than fifteen minutes. If I want to do a … Continue reading

A Different Type of Family Devotion

Since Christina and I are both focusing our first few blog entries on the subject of Bible study and devotion I thought that I would write about a different type of family devotion: a spousal Bible devotion or discussion. This type of study is a good deviation from an all-inclusive family devotion because it allows the study to be on an adult level which might not be achieved around younger children. My husband and I both have a habit of doing our own personal Bible study before we go to bed each night. We are not usually reading the same … Continue reading
