Gastroenteritis

Gastroenteritis — irritation and/or inflammation of the stomach and intestines — is a common cause for nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Other symptoms can include a low grade fever, bloating, and cramping. Lots of things can cause a bout of gastroenteritis, but the two most common culprits are viruses and bacteria. Bacterial versions can last a week or more; viral versions are mild in comparison and last just a few days. Some bacterial causes of gastroenteritis can include: E. coli, salmonella. Some viral causes of gastroenteritis can include: adenoviruses, rotaviruses, and noroviruses. In fact, the norovirus (also known as Norwalk virus … Continue reading

What is it about Moose and Summer?

Oh yes, it’s time for another thrilling installment of How My Dog Moose Tried to Scare Me to Death. A quick recap: in June of 2007, Moose slipped his collar and got hit by a car. He broke his tail very close to the base of his spine, and had to have the whole thing removed. In July of last year, he started throwing up blood clots thanks to a giardia infestation. Once again, the warm weather brings out the worst in Moose. My poor boy has always had a sensitive stomach, so I’m pretty familiar with how to handle … Continue reading

Treating Your Dog’s Diarrhea

Once upon a time Aimee wrote an article about her adventures with POOPAPALOOZA 2006. (Which is pretty darn amusing by the way. Gross, but amusing.) At any rate, I was reminded of that article when Murph had major tummy troubles recently. Thankfully Murph did not follow Moose’s lead and leave any “Lake Poop-eriors” anywhere. He’s pretty good about pestering us mercilessly to let him out if we’re around to pester. Which is good, because he was dealing with some pretty nasty, messy, runny poop. And a lot of it. I ended up taking him to the vet because the things … Continue reading

Dealing with Doggie Diarrhea

Since seven o’clock Friday morning Murph’s had diarrhea. (Or what I like to call “ookie belly.”) Thankfully he’s extremely awesome about telling us he needs to go out and he needs to go out now. Yesterday morning it was every hour or two he’d need to make an emergency visit to the backyard. (Thankfully he’s also very good about going back there and coming right back in since we don’t have a fence.) Murph’s a muncher and every so often finds who knows what on our walks when either Wayne or I isn’t paying attention. He has a little diarrhea … Continue reading

Travel Health: Safe Food

Contaminated food and drink can be an easy way for infection to slip into a traveler’s body. Among the common infections that can come from contaminated food and drink are dysentery, E. coli, noroviruses, and hepatitis A. Other diseases like cholera, parasites, and typhoid fever are less common, but may still be a danger. How do you keep your food safe? Be selective. Any and all raw food may be a source of contamination. That includes salads, uncooked vegetables, unpasteurized milk, cheeses, shellfish, and raw fish. Even food that has been cooked can be bacterial playgrounds if the food has … Continue reading

Quick Household Remedies for Stomach Problems

You don’t always have to turn to the drug store when you’ve eaten something that doesn’t agree with you. There are plenty of things around the house that can help ease an upset stomach! Feeling nauseated? Having a bout of indigestion? Try this: Sip ginger ale. Any flat soda can help settle your stomach, but ginger has long been used in easing stomach problems. Try a spoonful of the syrup from a can of fruit. Many over-the-counter stomach remedies are mostly sugar anyway! Suck on a peppermint or chew mint gum. Mint is another stomach settler, and the act of … Continue reading

The Most Common Travelers’ Illness

If you’ve ever been out of the country, you may have experienced the most common illness affecting travelers: travelers’ diarrhea. As many as ten million international travelers develop travelers’ diarrhea. The illness most often begins during the first week of travel but can strike at any time while traveling, and even after returning home. I was lucky enough to experience travelers’ diarrhea on a family trip to the Caribbean; for at least half of our time on a lovely island, I was curled up in the hotel room. My brother and cousin laughed at me, but once we got home, … Continue reading
