Buying a Super-Zoom Camera

To Super-Zoom or not to Super-Zoom? That is the question. In a previous blog I discussed the newest category of high performance digital cameras—-the Super-Zoom. The Super-Zoom or Ultra-Zoom has been hailed by pros as the “new digital product of the year.” Camera experts claim the Super-Zoom combines the best features of point-and-shoot cameras and digital SLRs and it is sold at a price that won’t break the bank. So where can you get your hands on one and how much will it set you back? I looked online and found two Super-Zooms that consistently got rave reviews and both … Continue reading

A New Camera for Mom

I got the funniest email from a reader the other day regarding my blog on Mother’s Day gift ideas. In the post I listed a few photo accessories I thought would make affordable presents for a mother/photographer. The reader didn’t take aim at my choice in items, but he did have a problem with their prices (all the gifts were under $50). He noted: “Isn’t mom worth more than a $20 beaded camera neck strap?” Frankly, I found his remark quite funny. Do I think moms are worth more than 20 bucks? Absolutely. Definitely. Without a doubt. Of course. Hel… … Continue reading

Camera Features That Make Capturing Smiles Easier

Now that you know how to get even the most camera shy subjects to flash their pearly whites it would be a shame if you still walked away with blurry shots. It has happened to me. I get my little one to ham it up like there’s no tomorrow and my shot still comes out looking as though I took it during an earthquake. What gives? Doesn’t the camera know I can’t get my 3-year-old to smile forever? I’ll admit I should be blaming my technique more than my camera, still there are cameras on the market that make life … Continue reading

Should I Delete This Picture?

If you have a digital camera this is a question you have likely asked many, many times. I am in the midst of preparing for my family’s annual trip to Hawaii and recently sat down to purge photos from my camera that have been in there since last spring. As you can tell this task was a long time coming. The exercise proved to be time consuming, but productive. I can’t say that I came away with any earth-shattering revelations (besides not waiting 10 months to go through your shots); however, I know that I am not the only snap … Continue reading

A Digital Camera for Serious Shooters

I’ve spent much of the week reviewing digital cameras designed for photographers like myself—-the serious amateur shooter. The type of person, who doesn’t shy away from the title of snap happy parent, but who is not able to make a living off of her photo skills (yet anyway). Never mind that I am not able to generate a viable income from my photography, I can’t even afford to buy professional grade photo equipment. Luckily I am friends with multiple professional photographers who are kind enough to allow me to experiment with their expensive equipment. (Hence this blog.) My latest “victim” … Continue reading

The Difference Between Two Digital Cameras From the Same Company

Camera shopping is no easy task, especially if you are in the market for your first digital camera. Navigating the maze of features is challenging enough without having to figure out why some companies make virtually the same camera with two different names. Add to the confusion a company like Nikon, which is guilty of the aforementioned offense then has the audacity to simply add an “x” to the end of the camera’s name to differentiate it from its “x-less” counterpart. I’m referring to the Nikon D40 and D40x digital cameras. They are both decent SLRs, but they are fundamentally … Continue reading

Small SLRs with a Twist

In previous blogs I’ve focused on the growing number of shrinking digital SLRs. Stroll through a camera shop (or any electronics store for that matter) and you will see shelves crammed with digital cameras of varying sizes. In the increasingly crowded marketplace of digital photo equipment, camera makers have had to distinguish themselves from their competitors in innovative ways. For Olympus that has meant reaching for a large audience with a smaller camera. Take a look at the company’s E-410 and E-510 models and you’ll understand what I’m talking about. The Olympus E-410 is noticeably small for an SLR camera. … Continue reading

A Powerful Pocket Camera

For 450 bucks it better pack a punch… or at least take some stellar pics. Yes, the Canon PowerShot G9 does retail for $450. And yes, it is a pocket camera. But it does include many of the same features you would expect to see on a SLR. This camera is designed for the serious photographer who doesn’t want to tote around a standard size SLR on all of his or her photo shoots. Canon’s G series allows you to point-and-shoot (it even comes with a point-and-shoot mode), but it is by no means a traditional point-and-shoot camera. The camera … Continue reading

Ultra-Compact Digital Cameras—-The Trend Continues

It was never my intent to feature an abundance of ultra-compact camera reviews in this blog particularly since I don’t especially care for these types of digital cameras that squeeze so many features (albeit successfully) in such a compact space. However, since the trend in ultra-compact digital cameras is growing at such a rapid pace I would be doing potential fans of these digicams a disservice if I simply ignored their presence on camera store shelves. With that said here are two more ultra-compact digital camera options that have become hot sellers in recent months: SAMSUNG NV10 I know what … Continue reading
