Dinosaur Fun

My daughter wants to celebrate her 6th birthday with a huge dinosaur-theme party. The only problem is that she won’t be turning six until late next spring. That’s an eternity for a kindergartner. In an effort to make the wait a bit more tolerable, I’ve been collecting dinosaur-theme crafts for her to make on the weekends. Some of them will be used as party decorations while others are being used as tests to see if they are appropriate projects to make with a dozen or so 5 year olds. Here’s what we’ve been working on: PAPER PLATE DINO Materials: Paper … Continue reading

Travel Tidbits: Free Gas, It’s a Gas, and a Ghastly Sight

FREE GAS It doesn’t get much cheaper than free, right? Then again, is anything in life truly free? You can ponder that while you are trying to win 9,000 gallons of gas from a West Virginia casino. Wheeling Island Hotel-Casino-Racetrack is offering guests who are considering canceling their summer road trip due to record high gas prices the chance to walk away with fuel that is estimated to be worth more than $30,000. It’s no joke. The casino is giving away a tanker of fuel to one lucky person on April 18th. Players can earn entries for the grand prize … Continue reading

“Mommy, There’s A Dinosaur In The Airport!”

In the first four months of 2007, my 3-year-old daughter has flown more than 21,000 miles. We have spent more hours in Chicago’s O’Hare airport than I care to remember (though the experiences are rather hard to forget). At this point my daughter knows her way around Terminal One better than some of the custodians… and certainly better than most business travelers. These days she knows if we fly United Airlines she will be reunited with her friend “Brachy.” They’re pals now, but it wasn’t always this way. In fact, the first time she laid eyes on “Brachy” she wanted … Continue reading

The Big Dig

In a previous blog I profiled one of the country’s most popular places to dig for dinosaur bones—real dinosaur bones. (Yes, my young daughter was catching on to the fact that the “bones” she dug for in the sand box at our local children’s museum were not the real deal so I started to explore travel options to allow her to experience life as a real paleontologist.) If you have a budding paleontologist in your home who is looking to get his or her pick dirty digging into the past you may consider visiting the Museum of Western Colorado in … Continue reading

Where To Dig For Dinosaurs

If you have a 3-year-old who runs through the house screaming: “Mommy, Mommy, a Camarasaurus is chasing me” (like I do), then it’s time to head to Wyoming. That’s where you’ll find the Wyoming Dinosaur Center. My little one has outgrown the “sandbox” dinosaur dig pit at our local museum and longs to play paleontologist at a larger venue. Digging for a 15-ton long-necked herbivore… well, it doesn’t get much bigger than that. So here we are planning a summer trip to Thermopolis, Wyoming (yeah, who knew?) –located about 80 miles southeast of Cody–to toss some dirt around at the … Continue reading

Dinosaur Birthday Party

Birthdays are a big deal in our family, but we don’t have a lot of money to spend each year. So when my son told me he wanted a dinosaur birthday party for his 6th birthday. I decided to get creative. I did his entire birthday party for under $50. I focused on three main things: Decorations, Games/Party Favors, and the Cake. Decorations a. To create a dinosaur scene I bought some butcher paper at a local school supply store and made the dinosaurs. I used paper bags and tissue paper for the volcano and palm trees. b. I taped … Continue reading
