Divorcing Couple Fights Over Kidney

When conflict arises in a marriage, it sometimes leads to divorce proceedings which then leads to more conflict. For one New York couple, the fighting stems not over a home or other visible possessions, but over a kidney. Back in 2001, Dr. Richard Batista donated one of his kidneys to his wife, Dawnell. Now, these many years later, he wants it back. The wife filed for divorce in 2005, and while the divorce is still yet to be finalized, the kidney is still on the list of disputes. Dr. Batista says that in lieu of the kidney, he would accept … Continue reading

A Warning to Warring Parents

Alec Baldwin and Kim Basinger, along with other parents who are embattled in bitter custody disputes, take note: Leave your children’s toys alone when looking to bury your spouse. Take it from the Lewton’s of Omaha, Nebraska, using your kid’s beloved playthings to dig up dirt on your estranged spouse is not the way to go. According to news reports, William Lewton is currently suing his ex-wife for allegedly planting a voice recorder inside the head of their daughter’s favorite teddy bear in order to document conversations that would prove him an unfit parent. Not such a smooth move on … Continue reading

Does it Matter if You Don’t Go to Church and WorshipTogether?

How important is it in marriage to attend the same church and worship together? Does it matter if you are different denominations or go to different churches? Obviously the problem of different churches or denominations is not insurmountable but it certainly is something that needs to be taken into consideration and discussed before marriage. In many churches the number of women who attend far outweighs that of men. This causes an imbalance in churches. In a marriage situation this means that the husband is not taking the spiritual leadership role he should. Wives who go to church when the husband … Continue reading

Do You Want to Know What God Hates?

Do you want to know what God hates? The bible tells us. Here are some things mentioned. God hates: Unjust scales Proverbs 11: 1, 20:23. God doesn’t want to see people cheated. That’s good for us to remember at tax time and in our dealings with others. I think it also applies not just financially but to cheating others in what we give to a relationship. Boasting and those who do iniquity, lies and deceit, violence and bloodshed, Psalm 5:5-6. Divorce, Malachi 2:16. Notice, God does not say he hates the divorced person but divorce. Life long marriage of one … Continue reading

Mormons and Divorce – Part Four: Nevertheless . . .

As I’ve posted the blogs in this series, I’ve presented the very real fact that Mormons get divorced. In 2000, a study was held that stated 6% of temple marriages end in divorce. I’ll wager the percentage is higher now, although lower than the national average which currently stands at around 50%. Mormons do get divorced. It is possible. It’s also something that can be done without receiving condemnation from the Church—the act of divorce, in and of itself, is not a sin which needs to be repented of. Instead, it’s the actions that lead to the divorce that constitute … Continue reading

Mormons and Divorce – Part One: What Do Mormons Believe about Divorce?

In response to a comment made on one of my other blogs, I’m starting a short series entitled, “Mormons and Divorce.” I’m hoping to answer the questions posed by the commenter as well as others had by our readership here at Families.com. One often-asked question is, “What do Mormons believe about divorce?” Some hold the mistaken idea that if you’re Mormon, you can’t get a divorce, and if you do, you’ll be condemned. That’s not the case. We believe that marriage is the most important relationship you will ever have, second only to your relationship with God. We believe that … Continue reading

My Dad Wants to Attend My Mom’s Funeral

This afternoon my sister is going to hold a memorial service for my mom at the church she used to attend. My dad has informed me he plans on going. Which is fine. I told him he could be my personal representative because I won’t be there. (Yes, sadly, the rifts that started between my sister and I when my mom first got sick have only gotten bigger. Now I’m not on speaking terms with her.) I was only joking about the personal representative thing, but my dad did sort of feel he needed an excuse. For a variety of … Continue reading

Supporting Others who are Going Through a Divorce

Divorce is one of those experiences that no one can fully understand until they have been through it. No matter how many movies and televisions shows one watches, getting through a divorce is more intense and consuming than anything one might imagine. Whether you are the one who instigates the divorce or not, or whether or not you know that it is the right thing to do—if there are children involved and it requires a reorganization of your family, no one understands like someone who has been there, done that. I think this is one of the reasons that those … Continue reading

Guy Ritchie’s Mom Sounds Off on Son’s Alleged Split from Madonna

Maybe they’re not getting a divorce after all. Maybe, just maybe, the media is making a mountain out of a molehill and Madonna and her husband Guy Ritchie are simply going through a rough patch and plan to work things out. Naaah! Actually, if you believe Ritchie’s mom, the Madonna-Guy divorce rumors are just that—-“works of fiction” dreamed up by the media. Ritchie’s mom, Lady Amber Leighton, broke down and went public today claiming that talk of a divorce between the Material Girl and her filmmaker husband is “total tosh.” Speculation that the superstar couple is on the road to … Continue reading

Madonna’s Divorce Could it Mirror Bill Murray’s?

Not likely, according to the countless media “experts,” who have been watching the split between the Material Girl and her husband Guy Ritchie unfold. For months rumors have been swirling that Madonna and Ritchie were headed for splitsville and now several TV and newspaper reports claim the pop star is seeking advice from Paul McCartney’s divorce attorney (this after initial talks with a rival law firm broke down). The singer reportedly met with Fiona Shackleton, the lawyer who represented McCartney during his court battle with Heather Mills and Prince Charles during his split from Princess Diana. Meanwhile, Ritchie has reportedly … Continue reading
