Five Years of Moose!

I’m not always good at remembering birthdays and anniversaries, so I have a few online calendars to give me hints about the date. Today in my email was a happy birthday wish for my dog Moose from Dogster.com. I don’t know what his actual birthday is — I don’t know Lally’s birthday either — so we celebrate anniversaries. Some people call them Gotcha Days, as in “this is the day I gotcha.” Five years ago today, I drove to Ticonderoga, NY to pick up a foster dog named Coyote. I had picked him out from a series of shelter dog … Continue reading

What’s This about the Obamas Getting a Puppy?

Barack Obama’s win was, naturally, the talk of all the news yesterday. But of course the thing that caught my ear was the focus on how the Obamas were considering getting a puppy. The Puppy Speech I’d tried to stay awake for Obama’s victory speech Tuesday night, but instead I ended up falling asleep. I guess if I would have watched it I would have heard for myself the part where he said he was going to reward his daughters’ support and patience during the campaign with a puppy. I was surprised to hear they were considering a puppy. I … Continue reading

Adopt a Shelter Dog Month: Getting Ready

October is Adopt a Shelter Dog month! If you’ve decided that this is the right time to add a four-legged family member, congratulations. Shelter pets are awesome… and yes, I’m biased because all of my pets have been rescues. Pet adoption isn’t an easy thing these days. A lot of shelters and rescues want to check vet references, meet the entire family, and may even want to visit your home! Dogster.com (one of my favorite pet sites) polled nearly 200 shelters and came up with a great list of things to think about before you adopt a dog or cat. … Continue reading

Adopt a Shelter Dog Month: Share Your Story!

October is Adopt a Shelter Dog month! If you’ve been thinking about rescuing a pet from a local shelter, this is a good time to do it. (Okay, there isn’t really a BAD time to save a pet from a shelter, is there?) There are so many wonderful pets sitting in shelters for various reasons. Maybe their owners had an unexpected health issue and had to surrender them. Maybe a soldier was deployed and couldn’t find a new home for a beloved pet. Maybe an abandoned dog or cat had a litter in the wild and was picked up by … Continue reading

DeGeneres’ Doggie Dilemma

If you don’t want to see Ellen DeGeneres in the midst of a massive emotional meltdown then you’ll want to steer clear of her talk show today. Hollywood is buzzing about DeGeneres being in the doghouse with a local animal adoption agency. Reports say the talk show host broke down sobbing yesterday while she was taping an episode that is slated to air today. The actress and her partner, Portia de Rossi, reportedly took home a Brussels Griffon mix named Iggy late last month, but it appears the energetic pup was a bit too much for the couple to handle … Continue reading

Pedigree Adoption Drive

Maybe you’ve seen the commercial: images of dogs with a voiceover that talks about how they know how to sit, or roll over, or do other tricks. What they don’t know, says the announcer, is why they’re in a shelter or when they’ll find a home. It’s a heartbreaker… but it’s part of Pedigree’s campaign to help increase adoptions in 2007. Pedigree’s adoption drive site has plenty of information about where and how to find a dog (or cat) in your area. There are loads of great tips for people who are getting ready to pick out a new pet, … Continue reading

Roady’s Long, Strange Trip

Lisa Pietsch is the Community Coordinator/Jack of All Trades/Boss of All Bloggers here at Families.com. In a roundabout way, I got to help her find her second dog, Roady. Aimee: What inspired you to look for a second dog? Lisa: I had no intention of looking for a second dog. We’d lost a dog (Thor) just a year earlier and he had been very dear to me. I wasn’t at a point where I felt I could bring another dog into our home yet. I found Roady purely by accident. I was reviewing a blog that you had written about … Continue reading

A Story About Kai (Part II)

After we decided to make Kai a part of our family, it was necessary to schedule another vet visit. I give nothing but high marks to the veterinarians at Banfield Pet Hospital in Garland. They provided numerous services to help me take care of this newly found dog. Because of how badly he’d been treated, they gave me a lot of discounts because Kai needed a lot of stuff done. I put Kai on the medical plan they offer that reduces cost and they cut costs for me. We scheduled his shots and to have him spayed. The cryptoid required … Continue reading

Saying Goodbye to Miko

Don’t know who Miko is? Look here. ~~~~ Friday night was perfectly normal. TV and dinner followed, and Miko helped me eat the chicken on my salad. He curled up at my side to sleep. Saturday morning, he was gone. He had left the bed to go into the back room and drift away in peace. At first, I thought he was sleeping. But when he didn’t respond to any amount of noise I made, the horrible truth hit me. I couldn’t bring myself to leave the sunny safety of the kitchen and touch him to verify. I was afraid … Continue reading
