“9 to 5” to Appear on Broadway

I love the movie 9 to 5. I remember going to see it at the theater with my parents when it opened in 1980. We loved it so much that we scooped up the grandmothers and went to see it again. In case you never saw it, 9 to 5 was about three women (Dolly Parton, Jane Fonda, and Lily Tomlin) who were struggling with a 9 to 5 job that came with a chauvinist, self-centered boss who intended to keep the in their place. Now, 9 to 5 is going to be a Broadway show. The producers announced that … Continue reading

Rock Star Babylon: They Did What?

I love the “Babylon” books – those named, of course, after the biblical city Babylon. These books talk about the materialistic and hedonistic pleasures of – you guessed it – celebrities and musicians. The first one I read was “Hollywood Babylon: The Legendary Underground Classic of Hollywood’s Darkest and Best Kept Secrets” by Kenneth Anger. Ah, this one dished a lot of dirt about classic Hollywood stories: Errol Flynn’s brushes with under aged girls (which lead to brushes with the law), Rudolph Valentino (was the “Latin Lover” really gay?), the Fatty Arbuckle scandal (so much for “innocent until proven guilty”), … Continue reading

Wagoner has Lung Cancer and Kid Rock Arrested…Again

It was revealed today that country legend Porter Wagoner has lung cancer. I had blogged a couple of days ago that he was in a Nashville hospital in serious condition, but his publicist has not said why he was hospitalized. He did get a visit from his country music protégé Dolly Parton earlier this week. Dolly and Porter have had an on again off again relationship since he took her under his wing in 1967. They performed together as duet partners for several years before, after several disagreements, Dolly decided to strike out on her own. She wrote her #1 … Continue reading

Country Music’s New Home and Bruce’s Big Gig

COUNTRY MUSIC’S NEW HOME Dolly Parton, Hank Williams, Patsy Cline, and Brenda Lee… they are just a few of the big name country entertainers whose work has a new home today. A two-story brick structure rich in history is now the home of the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame. The new Hall of Fame shares space with students enrolled in a songwriting major at Belmont University. Which is just fine by Parton. “It’s nice to know now we have a home… it was a long time coming,” the legendary singer/songwriter told reporters at an event promoting the new Hall of … Continue reading

Dolly Delivers

Country singing sensation Dolly Parton has done a lot for her Smokey Mountains hometown. Years ago she opened her Dollywood theme park in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, near Gatlinburg. Money generated by park visitors helps boost the local economy, and townspeople say they have Dolly to thank. Now, residents have another reason to appreciate their hometown sweetheart. Parton recently announced she plans to honor the country doctor who delivered her by pledging $500,000 to a $90 million hospital and cancer center in her hometown. “I have wonderful, wonderful memories of Dr. (Robert F.) Thomas,” Parton told guests at a dinner hosted … Continue reading

The 29th Annual Kennedy Center Honors was held on December 3 in Washington, D.C. The group of stars from film, stage, and music that were honored this year was quite varied. What’s Happening In The World Of Music

And you thought she just appeared at Dollywood… not so… in fact, Dolly Parton just announced she will kick off her first major European tour since the 1970s in Denmark next year. According to Parton’s publicist, the 60-year-old country singer will begin her eight-stop tour in Horsens, 125 miles west of Copenhagen, on March 7, 2007. From there Parton will continue to Norway, Sweden, Finland, the Netherlands, England and Scotland before ending the tour April 2 in Dublin, Ireland. A bit closer to home, Disney announced yesterday that “High School Musical” is hitting the road with a nationwide concert tour … Continue reading
