Spend Earth Day in the Great Outdoors

Uncle Sam is jumping on the Earth Day bandwagon by encouraging you to head outside this week. It may just be coincidence, but National Park Week is taking place from April 17-25, just in time for Thursday’s Earth Day celebrations. From now through next Sunday entrance fees will be waived at 392 national parks. In addition, many parks have organized events, talks, demonstrations and volunteer clean-ups to encourage visitors to check out what Mother Nature has to offer at our nation’s most spectacular natural treasures. Some of the more interesting events include: April 18th-Get ready to cheer while you watch … Continue reading

So with the 40th anniversary of Earth Day on April 22, you may want to start teaching your children to be green with a few of these ideas: * Teach children to turn off electronics such as the computer and television when not in use. * If you live near stores, take the children for a walk there instead of driving. * Teach children to turn off the lights when they leave the room. * Start … Continue reading

Earth Day 2010

This April 22 will be the 40th anniversary of Earth Day. Earth Day began in 1970 when Wisconsin senator Gaylord Nelson proposed an environmental protest to “to shake up the political establishment and force this issue onto the national agenda.” Of course, back in 1970, air pollution was worse that it is now and Americans were sucking up gas at an alarming rate, so perhaps a protest was more in order. On that first April 22nd, approximately 20 million took to the streets to protest for a healthier environment, led by national coordinator Denis Hayes. College students all around the … Continue reading

Hot Kitchen Cabinet Styles

Kitchen cabinets, just as other aspects of the home, feature new trends and must have styles. Door and draw pulls that are either absent or small and clean are being featured. … Continue reading

Greening up Your Technology

Low-Flow Toilets

Low-Flow Toilets have had a bad reputation, but today’s models are a new generation of technology, featuring high efficiency and even lower water usage. In fact, new toilets can use less than a gallon of water. Compare that with the pre-1992 models that used from three to five gallons of water per flush. Why did I choose 1992? That is because the 1992 Energy Policy Act banned the sale of 1.6 gallon toilets (that used 3-5 gallons per flush). Homeowners in general weren’t too happy with the act because early low-flow toilets were not always effective, requiring more than one … Continue reading
