Falling Off the Wagon

After so many months of doing good, I have fallen off the wagon. The past couple of weeks I have been struggling to get in exercise. Actually, I shouldn’t really say I have been struggling…it has been easy to not exercise. Circumstances in life have gotten me feeling down, and unfortunately I have been handling it (or should I say not handling it) by eating junk food and skipping exercise. I am stuffing my emotions with food, something I thought I had overcome. It’s frustrating that I could so easily allow troubles in life to do this. Months and months … Continue reading

Baby: To Schedule, Or Not To Schedule?

My husband and I never considered putting our baby on a schedule while I was pregnant, and we didn’t think about it after she was born. When we thought she was hungry, I nursed her, and when she seemed tired, we let her sleep. I thought that was what most parents did, but as we talked to more and more new parents, we realized it’s very common for parents to get their babies on a regular schedule almost immediately. I admit that there were some days when I wondered if I was hurting our daughter by having a “go-with-the-flow” attitude. … Continue reading

How to Share Restaurant Meals to Save Money

As our family grew to include five people, the bill for eating out grew as well. But there is also a benefit to having a larger family. You can take advantage of this fact to strategically share meals. Many times when my family does this together, we actually wind up with more food for less money. Think about it. When you are eating at home, you generally serve everyone the same thing anyway? With a restaurant meal, you will often have a little more flexibility and choice, but the idea is the same. Also, all of the extras that come … Continue reading

Even More Ways to Get a Toddler to Eat

Do you have a picky eater in your house? Some days I used to think that my children would waste away to nothing. But I refuse to be a short order cook or to serve them food that isn’t nutritionally balanced. So, here are more tricks and tips that have worked for my family and the family of some of my mom friends. Hopefully there is something in here that you can use if you have a picky toddler. Rabbit Wants His Carrot In the last post, I talked about how having Wall-E plate really helped get dinner devoured by … Continue reading

Frugal Breakfast Recipe Choices

I’m sitting here, enjoying the daylight savings time and contemplating what to make my family for breakfast today. Making breakfast from scratch is a good way to save money. Cold cereal, while we do love it, can get pretty expensive. And we also have a tendency to overeat it, since it isn’t very filling. Pancakes are great, but sometimes we want something different. Of our frugal breakfast choices, here are items on the menu. These are breakfast foods that I have made so many time that I can probably make them in my sleep. Scrambled eggs and cheese Eggs are … Continue reading

No More Eating Out

A challenge in and of itself for our family, but one that we stuck to for over two months, was our family challenge of no more eating out. I am not going to pretend that we didn’t eat out for two whole months, but we did cut it down so much that at most we are eating out once a week. This is usually on the weekends. What was the purpose of trying this experiment? Several reasons actually, which I would like to take a moment to explain. Health and Fat Intake The first reason, was to cut back on … Continue reading

Don’t Say “Don’t Snack”!

We’ve all heard it. “Don’t snack or you’ll ruin your dinner!” I have to say that I think that one goes right up there on the lame things to say list along with “Make sure you eat everything on your plate”. If you grew up in a family like mine, you heard these two things quite a bit. Then again, if you grew up in a family like mine, you probably could stand to lose some weight. America’s youth is getting fatter and fatter and it needs to stop. Let’s stop saying these things to our kids! No, I’m not … Continue reading

Is Stress Eating Killing You?

Figuring out why you’ve gained weight in the first place is half the battle of losing weight. Are you a stress eater? I know that when my toddler has super-tantrum days (and they are super-tantrums), the first thing I reach for is something starchy: potato chips, crackers, bread, bagels, cookies. Starch soothes me. I’m a stress eater. Do you reach for the cupboard when relationships, time commitments and work overwhelm you? If so, you’re a stress eater too. If you’re a stress eater trying to lose weight and haven’t yet found some other way to deal with stress then forget … Continue reading

The Man With The Bottomless Stomach Injures Jaw

A few months ago I blogged about meeting Takeru Kobayashi. The man is an eating machine and has rapidly become a pop culture icon for his ability to win just about every eating contest known to man. Last year he was in Wisconsin to participate in a bratwurst eating contest and he didn’t disappoint. The native of Japan flew to the Dairy State and devoured 58 bratwurst in 10 minutes. It was quite possibly the most stomach churning sight I have ever witnessed in my life (but exhilarating at the same time). That day Kobayashi set the world record for … Continue reading
