What NOT To Sell On The Internet

You have to wonder how financially strapped some people must be to have the nerve to put the following items up for auction on the Internet. Take for instance the Brazilian man who offered to sell his wife for about $50. It’s not only sad, but it’s true… and it prompted the government to intervene. According to news reports, Brazil’s Secretariat of Public Policies for Women ordered Mercado Livre, which is partially owned by eBay, to remove the ad for the man’s wife and warned it was violating a law banning the offer or sale of “human organs, people, blood, … Continue reading

One For The Record Books–eBay’s Most Expensive Item

Can you guess what it is? I’ll give you a hint. It has four wheels, two doors, a Confederate flag, and is a wash in a shade of orange most people run from. If you guessed: a version of the General Lee – a 1969 Dodge Charger, which, by all accounts, was the most famous character on the television show “The Dukes of Hazzard” – you are correct. The iconic car fetched a winning bid on eBay of nearly $10 million Friday. According to eBay executives, if the bidder comes through with the $9,900,500 price, the car will be the … Continue reading

My Two Favorite eBay Finds

I have sold items on eBay for several years now. I was fortunate enough to live down the street from a video store that got rid of their old VHS tapes for $2 each. I was able to find a lot of out of print VHS tapes that way and some sold for as much as $20 on eBay. But, I have my two favorite eBay success stories that I love to tell to other people. These great finds cost a total of $1, yet brought in over $500 on eBay. After my mother died, I grew up in my … Continue reading

The Pope’s Former Wheels—Deal or No Deal?

Going, going… STAYING! So much for driving to Sunday mass in the Pope’s former car. Apparently, no one was willing to fork over enough money to pay for a 1999 metallic gray Volkswagen Golf believed to once belong to Pope Benedict XVI. The hatchback was up on eBay, but the auction ended Saturday without a winner. According to news reports, this is the second time in two years the car has been up for bid with no takers. This time the bids surpassed $204,000, but that still didn’t meet the reserve price. (A spokeswoman for eBay, told reporters it was … Continue reading

PayPal $15 off $30 Purchase

Google Checkout is turning up the heat on PayPal. With its ease of use, good customer service, and the $10 off promotion during Christmas, it made some substantial gains very quickly. I love Google Checkout and have had nothing but positive experiences with them. I consider PP a necessary evil. PayPal is striking back, though. (Don’t you love good competition?) From now through March 31, spend $30 at an eligible merchant and receive $15 deposited into your PayPal account by May 28. If you shop on eBay, it is included as a PayPal merchant as long as the seller’s account … Continue reading

All About Me- a New Blogger in Town

I started blogging here at families.com less than a week ago, and am just now getting around to introducing myself. I am blogging about home business topics, using my experience to generate advice that other families can use. I started out very small, selling inexpensive items on eBay. I worked up to larger items, then expanded into having 100 or more listings at a time. My record was about 175 simultaneous listings on the site one year at Christmas time. I evolved from eBay into three other sites and sold on all four simultaneously for a couple of years. Needless … Continue reading

Supplement Your Home-Based Income by “Swapping Up”

At the beginning of the new year the pastor at my church gave a sermon on simplicity. “Do you really need fifteen pairs of shoes?” He asked the congregation. While I’ve never been much of a shoe collector, I do like to horde craft notions and books. I had a room full of glues, paints, brushes, scissors and other odds and ends I never used. My husband and I decided to start our own “de-cluttering campaign” to kick off the new year. We tackled my craft room, his extensive coat collection and both of our closets that were overflowing with … Continue reading

Selling Clothes Online

A lot of entrepreneurs get their start on eBay, and often through selling clothing. Everyone has clothes, and parents so often find themselves with outgrown clothing that they have little use for. But, clothing is by far the largest category on the site, and the competition is fierce. With the recent raise in fees, it is often not profitable to sell used clothing on eBay at all, but there are a few exceptions. One of the exceptions I have found is for very high end clothing. These are the brands that people will be actively searching for. If you have … Continue reading

What To Know Before Making A Living Off Of eBay

What is your idea of the perfect job? For some it’s buying, selling and bargaining. And, what better place to do so than in the comfort of your own home, on your own computer, using what some consider the ultimate online auction site–eBay? For thousands of Americans, eBay isn’t just a hobby… it’s a living. Just ask my neighbor. He spends his day packing, stamping and filling out customs forms in the basement of his home. He has made eBay a full-time job. The hours are flexible, it’s convenient and he loves it. He started off making less than $100 … Continue reading

What NOT To Sell On eBay

Recently, I blogged about the Illinois man who was trying to sell a lock of his hair on eBay… the response from Families.com readers was overwhelming as was reaction from bidders (some I later found out were bogus). Needless to say, the auction item definitely raised some eyebrows. Well, brace yourself, because if you thought that guy was pushing his luck, then you aren’t going to believe what one woman was trying to make money off of on the popular Internet auction site. According to Michigan police (that’s right, even the cops are involved in this strange case), officials are … Continue reading
