Poacher Turned Park Ranger

A former poacher now turned conservationist for the World Wildlife Fund. It seems an impossible irony, but it’s true. Lean Kha used to shoot dozens of endangered species, including bears, tigers, and elephants, in his native Cambodia but now it’s his mission to protect them. What happened? Yahoo News has the full details. To understand the transformation we need to examine Kha’s background. He started hunting at 13 years old, recruited by soldiers for Khmer Rouge. Kha hunted not for sport, not to collect hides with which to decorate his walls, but to support himself and his family. He’d sell … Continue reading

Zip It—Zip It Good!

Did you catch last week’s edition of “The Bachelor?” (I promise the only reason I am watching parts of it this season is because Andy the “bachelor” lives in Hawaii and my sister-in-law knows some of his friends.) Last week bachelor Andy took three of his potential mates to the island of Kauai to do a bit of sightseeing. On one of his dates he and his love interest Tessa went on a zipline adventure. But, how many of you actually take that “save-the-planet” philosophy on the road with you when you travel? These days “green travel” packages are becoming a popular alternative to the traditional family vacation. Don’t get me wrong, opting to “go green” while on vacation doesn’t mean having to sacrifice the comforts of a nice resort to spend the night in a mosquito-filled tent in the jungles of Borneo. All that is … Continue reading

A New Resort For Eco-Tourists

With all the media coverage surrounding the death of Steve Irwin I immediately thought of the “Crocodile Hunter” when I heard about this next travel item. I recently found out (through family members who work for the county of Hawaii’s Planning Department) that famed ocean explorer and environmentalist Jean-Michel Cousteau is lending his name and expertise to a resort proposed for the Big Island of Hawaii (the island that I was born and raised on). According to planning documents, the resort, which has yet to be named, will be designed “in the style of a historical plantation town and offer … Continue reading
