Making Memories

‘It’s our memories that make us,’ – this is the first line of Requiem for a Beast a picture book for older children and young adults. Though the book was in that case talking about indigenous people of Australia, in a sense it’s the same true for each of us. We are what we remember. A psychologist once told me that the mind chooses to forget those things that are too painful- that it doesn’t want to deal with. But I’ve also heard someone say that those with a happy childhood don’t store up memories. Since they both seem to … Continue reading

Joy in the Heart

This week Mick and I saw ‘Little House on the Prairie’ DVDs advertised on sale. What I always loved about this show was the way Christian faith was lived out in daily lives in a simple and honest way. ‘Little House on the Prairie’ also brings back memories as it was a show we watched regularly with our family. Some time back we’d bought series 1 and 2 but not the rest. This week we could only buy series 3. The others were sold out. Obviously we’re not the only ones who like it. As we watched, I said to … Continue reading

Carey’s Record Breaking Chart-toppers and Aniston’s Off the Chart New Project

“Touch My Body” by Mariah Carey, have you heard it on the radio? I haven’t, but after learning it recently made history I’m somewhat anxious to hear if it lives up to the hype. “Touch My Body” just became Carey’s 18th hit single and subsequently the pop diva has now passed Elvis Presley for the most No. 1 singles on the Billboard singles chart, and is now second only to the Beatles (the group holds the record with 20). It’s quite an accomplishment regardless of how you feel about Carey’s music or her image. Speaking of her image, Carey was … Continue reading

The Death of Dr. Martin Luther King

Today is the forty anniversary of the assassination of civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King. I remember the date primarily from the U2 song “Pride (In the Name of Love):” Early morning, April 4 Shot rings out in the Memphis sky Free at last, they took your life They could not take your pride Today in Memphis (my hometown) presidential candidates (Hilary Clinton and John McCain), civil rights leaders, labor activists, and citizens are meeting in Memphis to march in honor of Dr. King and his accomplishments. For those that don’t remember (I was only 5 in 1968, so … Continue reading

Lisa Marie Presley Peeved About Pregnancy Report

Oh, Elvis’ daughter is pregnant all right, only she didn’t want any of us to know it. Apparently, the King’s daughter wanted her bun in the oven to stay under wraps. However, thanks to several media outlets (hmm… how should I put this…) less than kind remarks about Lisa Marie’s expanding waistline (London’s “The Daily Mail” ran a pic of Lisa Marie and her mom Priscilla eating lunch in Los Angeles with the caption: “Like father like daughter? Bloated Lisa Marie is now the double of dad Elvis”) the 40-year-old singer says she was forced to announce her pregnancy. “After … Continue reading

Elvis Finds a New Home and Broadway Still Dark

And the winner is… Elvis fans who think the King is still alive. In a previous blog I discussed an interesting item I saw on eBay—-the contents of the Elvis is Alive Museum. The museum’s 81-year-old owner decided it was time to pass on his expansive collection of Elvis memorabilia–including an inordinate amount of photographs, books, FBI files, and DNA reports that aimed to support the theory that Presley never died—–to someone who could keep the debate alive for decades to come. Enter Andy Key who offered a winning bid of $8,000. The die-hard Elvis fan who insists the King … Continue reading

Elvis Museum For Sale

Okay all you Elvis fans, here’s a chance to really prove your dedication to the King. The man who has run The Elvis is Alive Museum is retiring and needs someone to pick up where he is leaving off. Eighty-one-year-old Bill Beeny has been the sole proprietor of the Missouri-based museum– which provides documentation that Elvis never died–for the past 17 years, and now he is looking for someone to take over the cause. Beeny has placed the contents of the museum, which includes every single piece of his expansive Elvis Presley memorabilia on eBay in hopes they will be … Continue reading

Pop Culture Memorabilia Brings In Big Bucks

At least it wasn’t a used hankie… I’m always amazed at how much people will fork over for items previously owned (or simply touched) by a big name star. A stained dress, broken lipstick, old socks, an empty dog food container that bring in thousands of dollars at auction always makes me question the buyer’s sanity… and source of income. But this next item is a bit easier to swallow: A classic Ferrari once owned by Steve McQueen sold for $2.31 million last night at auction. According to reports, an anonymous car collector threw out the winning bid (via phone) … Continue reading

Hollywood Icons Live On

He’s an Academy Award-winner whose mark on Hollywood is still evident today. Actor Jimmy Stewart will be honored with a stamp bearing his face on Friday and you can join in on the festivities. The U.S. Postal Service will officially release the new Jimmy Stewart stamp at ceremonies in Pennsylvania and Hollywood. The Pennsylvania ceremony will be held at the Jimmy Stewart Museum in Indiana, the actor’s hometown. The other will be held at Universal Studios in Hollywood. The Postal Service first announced that Stewart would be gracing a stamp last October. The picture on the stamp is based on … Continue reading
