A Study in Princesses: Giselle and Tiana

In the penultimate part of my piece on the Disney Princesses, we watch the House of Mouse strike out before finally starting to get it right. “Enchanted” is a tricky movie to critique because it’s mostly a spoof. For the majority of the movie Giselle is a parody of her predecessors, particularly those from the Golden Era. Hidden behind the laughs in “Enchanted” is a fantastic message (though one that gets sloppy when characters start vocalizing it): don’t just marry the first guy you meet. Spend time getting to know first yourself and then him. Learn what true love really … Continue reading

You’ve Got to Tell Her (Or Him) That You Love Her (Or Him)

This afternoon I finally had the chance to see Enchanted. Part of me had wanted to see it when it came out last summer, but I wasn’t sure I’d like it and didn’t want to risk dragging Wayne to it. But, since I just spent most of my day preparing turkey pot pies and cleaning up the kitchen, I am … Continue reading

Disney & The Fractured Fairy Tale

Disney’s planning to do something different this November with the release of Enchanted. They are hoping that their fractured fairytale will reinvigorate their animation departments and start a whole new franchise. In Enchanted Manhattan is the kingdom, a divorce lawyer is their prince and apparently pigeons and roaches will play the part of the forest creatures. The idea behind Enchanted is that it will poke fun at the Disney classics like Snow White and Cinderella. The film is considered a huge risk for the Disney franchise (not so much when you consider Ratatouille and Shrek), but then people view Disney … Continue reading
