Spreading Calm or Chaos?

When I was growing up, my mother used to refer to one particular mood or behavior as “spreading hate and discontent”—it usually referred to a crabby person who was just going around causing grief, grumbling, and picking arguments with other family members. I still think of that phrase on days when someone in my family is so crabby it is spilling over onto everyone else. BUT, there are also those times when peace and calm can get spread around too… Of course, I am definitely lumping myself in with those family members who have the ability to spread calm or … Continue reading

Watch Out for Just Getting By

We may start out in our home businesses with big plans and optimistic ideas of how we expect things will go. As time passes, we might let some of those expectations go, or at least modify our expectations to meet reality. This can be a mode of survival, of course, but it can also be one of the ways we sell ourselves short and fall into a mediocre rut with our businesses. Periodically, it helps to take a look at our energy and motivation and find out if we are just barely surviving and just getting by–and if we need … Continue reading

Raise Energy Levels With The Right Foods

You think you are eating right — but your energy levels are in the basement. Here are some tips to help you pick the right foods to keep your body running all day long! Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. But watch what you eat! Sugary foods (even yogurt) can lead to an energy nosedive after an hour or so. Try to get a mix of protein and fiber (especially from whole grains) for energy that lasts. Keep your sugar content low if you can. Speaking of sugar — that dried fruit is full of it. Fresh, … Continue reading

Blood Sugar Affects My Business

I confess, my blood sugar levels definitely affect my business operations. Perhaps that is rather uncool, and certainly not something you are likely to read about in one of the high-end business publications—but my productivity and temperament are directly related to what I have or have not eaten during the course of the work day… I know that I cannot embark on a big project or sit down to a long-distance negotiating phone call on an empty stomach. As a matter of fact, even though I can jump-start my work day with a cup or two of coffee, I really … Continue reading

A Special Needs Parenting Energy Crisis?

What is the greatest gift that you can personally give your child? Take a moment and think about your answer. It it LOVE? Love is a wonderful thing, but nope. I don’t think so. Love is not enough. We’ve all heard of parents who probably loved their kids very much, but lost them due to neglect or abuse. I don’t think we can always say that abusive parents don’t love their children. Even neglectful parents may love their kids. But they don’t have the tools, knowledge, or mental health to be good parents. So I ask again, what is the … Continue reading

Tips To Recharge Your Batteries

One of the things that amazes me about being a parent, especially the parent of a young child, is how draining it can be. When Tyler was born I expected the early years to drain me of energy but I figured as he aged and was able to do more for himself I would once again have the energy I had in my pre-baby days. NOT! It really does not get much better. Not only do you have your needs to take care of but the needs of a small walking, talking human. The past few months I have been … Continue reading

Sitting Still is Overrated

Have you ever thought about all the mixed messages we send our kids? Things like teaching them not to talk to strangers and then urging them to sit on the mall Santa’s lap and tell him what they want for Christmas. Or how about “respect your elders” and “stand up for what you believe in”? One of the issues I think we really send mixed messages about as a culture is physical activity. We tell our children we want them to be active and go outside and play, but then we are constantly telling them to sit and be still … Continue reading

E is for Energy

Calories are a unit of energy that provides fuel for your body and that we consume in our food. Calories are things we count and things we burn – but what we need them for is pure and simple: energy. The human body gets energy from two major sources: food and sleep. If you don’t eat properly, chances are you sleep a great deal. You can generate a false sense of energy from drinking caffeine or eating sugary products – but that energy is often short-lived and the crash is considerable afterwards. Outside of eating and sleeping, exercise is the … Continue reading

C is for Calorie

What is a calorie? Do you know what a calorie is? It’s a unit of energy. It’s the energy that exists in food and that our bodies in turn utilize. Ultimately, a calorie is determined to be the amount of heat that is required to heat 1 kilogram of water 1 degree Celsius. So if you have 240 calories in something, that’s enough energy to heat 1 kilogram of water to 240 degrees Celsius and that’s pretty hot, right? Calories Are Important Whether you care that there are 710 calories in a double cheeseburger or not, calories are a part … Continue reading
