Online Genealogy

A few months ago, I talked about doing genealogy from home. I promised to write a blog about researching your family history online and now, at last, I am keeping that promise! As a stay-at-home mom, I have a strong testimony of eternal families and a huge difficulty with doing any research. I’m not wanting my kids to grow up too quickly – I know it will happen faster than I can realize – but one thing I am looking forward to when they are old enough to be without me for a few hours is the research I can … Continue reading

Courthouse Genealogy

The first time I remember feeling the Spirit was when I learned that families could be sealed together for all of eternity. It should not be surprising, then, that I have a deep love of genealogy and truly enjoy researching my family tree. As a young mom, however, I have restricted most of my efforts thus far to the internet. A recent courthouse trip – my first – taught me a few lessons. For years, I have found nothing but a solid brick wall in regards to my great-great-great grandparents. I did not even know their name, only that of … Continue reading

RS/EQ: Serving God Through Eternity

The second section in the President Kimball lesson manual centers on the eternal mission of Christ. Though we usually think of Christ’s time on earth as the primary substance of His mission, we must keep in mind that, like all of Heavenly Father’s spirit children (that’s us), He existed before the creation of the world, and will continue to exist long after. During that time, He continuously obeys the will of God and keeps Him as a primary focus. As Latter-day Saints, we know that Christ was Jehovah of the Old Testament. He organized the physical world we live on … Continue reading

Gospel Doctrine: Unquenchable Fire

As I studied a bit more in Matthew 3, I stumbled across John’s warning to the Pharisees and Sadducees (verse 12). As many prophets have warned, those trees which fail to bring forth good fruit will be cast into the fire. There are a variety of references to fire in the scriptures. Sometimes, the fire is used to refine; at others, it is described as torment for those who fail to follow Christ. The refiners fire is often brief, and purifies and strengthens us. Impurities are removed, and we come through it closer to our Savior. In our everyday lives, … Continue reading

General Conference from the Past: “Conversion and Commitment”

As I researched some scriptures for this week’s lesson by President Kimball, I found an old General Conference talk that caught my attention. Since it is over a decade old, I thought it would be an excellent time to review and summarize it. The talk was given by Elder W. Mack Lawrence of the Seventy during the April 1996 General Conference. Focusing primarily on our conversion to the gospel and the subsequent commitment we have to obedience to its principles, Elder Lawrence emphasized our need to “strengthen our conversion to Christ.” Elder Lawrence started out by quoting Elder Romney of … Continue reading

Sunday Review: Quick to Observe

The first Sunday of the month, the Relief Society and Elder’s Quorum is taught by the Presidency of those groups, making them hard to prepare for in advance. But I would like to take a few moments to share the wonderful spiritual lesson I received yesterday, with the hopes that it brings the Spirit into your life. Our class yesterday came from the December 2006 issue of the Ensign, an article by Elder David Bednar entitled “Quick to Observe”. As I listened to the sister teaching the lesson, and then considered it during the drive home, I thought about the … Continue reading

Pray Without Ceasing

In the scriptures, we read over and over that we have been commanded to “pray without ceasing.” For instance: 3 Nephi 20:1 And he commanded them that they should not cease to pray in their hearts. 1 Thes. 5: 17 Pray without ceasing. Mosiah 26: 39 being commanded of God to bpray without ceasing, and to give cthanks in all things. The idea of a continuous monologue with the Lord seems both intriguing and overwhelming. On the one hand, to always be in contact with God means that we would be forever strengthening and improving our relationship with him. On … Continue reading

Brother vs. Brother

Hello from Texas! I’m here for my niece’s baptism and am having a wonderful week with my brother and his family. As I pondered this morning what to discuss in my blogs, the upcoming Sunday School lesson came to mind, Joseph and the Coat of Many Colors, my ancestor. I thought back to where my earliest knowledge of brother vs. brother began, it was Jesus Christ vs. Lucifer, a former son of the morning. Then my mind jumped ahead to Abel and Cain, where Cain’s ultimate jealousy brought about the murder of his brother, Abel. Moving ahead in time came … Continue reading
