Genealogy Resume

I have recently been putting together a genealogy resume for two reasons. Number one, I have decided to take my genealogy hobby professionally-much thanks to this blogging job for showing me how great it can be to get paid for what you really love. And number two, in order to allow me to reflect on my own personal strengths and weaknesses in regards to my genealogical experience and know-how. My completed genealogy resume will include all aspects of my genealogy “addiction” (for lack of a more appropriate word). I will include my reasons for doing genealogy, any education I have … Continue reading

Starting a Business in Your Line of Work (or Trying Something New)

Figuring out what your home business is going to be all about can come easily for some of us, but for others, we might spend years just trying to sort out what we think we ought to be doing, what we’re good at, and what we actually want to do. One of the big questions is whether to start a home business in a field that you already work in and have experience in, or do you go after something you’ve always wanted to do or head into a brand new field? The pros of starting a business doing something … Continue reading

Think of All the Hands On Training You’re Getting!

Even though most of us bring all sorts of skills and work experience to our home businesses, we may feel ill-prepared for all of the demands of the job we have taken on. I know that even though I thought I was well prepared to run my own business, I definitely learned quite a bit not just from business magazines and books, but also by actually doing the tasks and dealing with issues as they arose. When you feel overwhelmed or think you are completely out of your comfort zone in your home business—just think of all the valuable hands-on … Continue reading

Learning On the Job

I confess that I am a big reader—if I can find a book or a magazine article on something I am curious about or need to know that is my preferred way of learning. When I was a new parent, it was all about the parenting books. I read cookbooks, how-to books on various subjects, and definitely the business books. But, the truth is, there are just some things you can only learn on the job… One of the fabulous things about operating your own business is that the lessons can be endless. Unlike a more “traditional” job where you … Continue reading

You Can Talk About It, Read About It, But as Some Point, You Just Have to Do It

Recently, I was reminded of the wisdom in this saying when I was teaching someone how to do some new job tasks. She was as eager for me to turn them over and “stop talking” as I was eager to let things go and let her run with it. She reminded me that you can read about swimming and talk about swimming, but at some point you just have to jump in and swim. Since we were talking about work and business stuff, I thought this was a great reminder that there is no substitution for actually jumping in and … Continue reading

Keeping Personal Experience in Perspective

There have always been a great many things about my children that remind me of ME when I was their age. Sometimes the looks they give me, or the color of their hair or some of the things they say are triggers for a stroll down memory lane; other times the things they are going through seem eerily reminiscent of experiences that I had. Still, I have had to learn that they are not simply re-living my life and they are NOT me—I have to keep my own personal experiences in check and allow and appreciate their separate lives and … Continue reading

Experience Counts for Something

Starting a new endeavor, or entering into a new market can be incredibly scary. It takes a leap of faith and a hefty dose of determination. But, just because you feel like a bumbling novice as you work on elements of your home business, doesn’t mean that you really are. After all, all that experience you already have amassed–both work and life experience–definitely counts for something! Even if you are undertaking something new, or a new business owner, you are NOT a complete beginner. Chances are, you have all sorts of experience in the various aspects of the work world … Continue reading

What Can We Learn From Our Mistakes?

I remember being taught years ago that most of our most valuable lessons in life do not come from times when we do everything right. In fact, our most lasting and important lessons often come from our biggest blunders and mistakes. I know that I have definitely been making my fair share of mistakes since I started working on my home business. It’s amazing how those “mistake lessons” really have taught me some valuable lessons! Of course, this whole “learning from mistakes” thing is not necessarily something I appreciate when I’m in the midst of a big problem or mistake. … Continue reading

I Have No Education–I Cannot Get a Job

Yesterday, I wrote a blog about people wanting the perfect job who don’t have any special talents, training, or skills. I said that everyone has to bring something to the table by giving some reason for the employer to hire you, and I also said that people should get a job that they’re passionate about. I realized last night as I was getting ready for bed that I was dispensing general advice, with no concrete links to follow or advice to follow up on. Tomorrow, I am going to show how I would tackle specific (made up) scenarios of mothers … Continue reading

Have You Ever Been Scolded in Public?

The Summer, 2006 issue of “Brain, Child” magazine has an interesting essay written by Katy Read dealing with the issue most of us parents face at one time or another–having our parenting skills dressed down in public by total strangers. The unsolicited parenting advice and judgment doesn’t stop once the baby is out of diapers, either. Seems everyone has an opinion on how, where and why parents should handle and care for their children. The article got me to thinking about how I’ve honestly been on both sides of the fence on this one–I’ve definitely been the recipient of unsolicited … Continue reading
