Enchanted (2007)

I love a good fairy tale and I love a good spoof, so when the movie “Enchanted” came out, I knew I’d enjoy it. However, I didn’t get to see it until this last weekend. Why, oh why, did I wait? I loved it! We begin our film in an animated land called Anadalasia. It’s ruled by Queen Narissa, an evil woman who can’t stand the thought of anyone taking over her throne. We also meet Giselle, a lovely young woman who talks to animals and never loses her temper. One day, she meets Prince Edward, and after singing a … Continue reading

Mira, Mirror – Mette Ivie Harrison

We all know the story of Snow White and the Seven Dwarves. But we don’t know a lot about the wicked queen, and we know even less about her magic mirror. “Mira, Mirror” by Mette Ivie Harrison takes us on a journey through a different perspective of the fairy tale, into the past of the wicked queen and that mirror. The book is told through the point of view of Mira, a young girl who doesn’t possess any real beauty of her own. She is sold to the neighborhood witch for a cord of firewood, and becomes an apprentice to … Continue reading

Arthur & The Invisibles (2007)

This little film is very forgettable for me, but for my six year old it gets three thumbs up – her words, not mine. What I didn’t know, originally, was that the film was directed by Luc Besson, the mastermind behind The 5th Element. That being said, Arthur & The Invisibles is a rather charming fairy tale that features a truly wonderful young actor named Freddy Highmore. (Charlie & The Chocolate Factory & Finding Neverland) The film mixes live action with CGI. The film opens with Arthur (Highmore) at his grandmother’s (Mia Farrow) farm. The year is 1960. Arthur’s grandfather … Continue reading

The Princess Bride: Comedy, Romance and Adventure All Rolled into One

“As you wish.” I can only imagine that it must have been hard to take a story such as The Princess Bride and make it come alive on screen without letting the material fall flat on its face. But Rob Reiner persevered and made what remains one of the most beloved live action fairy tales of all time. The Princess Bride is the story of Buttercup, a princess who has been kidnapped by her would-be husband, the smarmy Prince Humperdinck. Enter the peasant: Westley. Having bound himself to Buttercup, he assumes the disguise of Dread Pirate Roberts in an attempt … Continue reading
