The History of Father’s Day

In the United States, Father’s Day is celebrated in June. Many of us are aware of the sales that take place around that time, with discounts on gift items that will appeal to dads. What many people are unaware of is the history of Father’s Day. Here is the story behind Father’s Day, and some father related statistics to go along with it. The very first Father’s Day was celebrated in the United States on July 5, 1908. It was celebrated at a West Virginia church with a sermon that was in memory of 362 men who died in explosions … Continue reading

Fun with Father’s Day Photos

No matter where you plan to spend Father’s Day, don’t forget to take your camera along to document the memories.  The photos you snap at the beach, park, pool or right in your backyard can be transformed into touching mementos of Dad’s special day. Take aim at Dad and the kids frolicking in the waves, burying each other in the sand or searching for bugs along a nature trail.  Shoot from unique angles rather than traditional ones and don’t be afraid to experiment with different exposures.  More importantly, ditch the posed shots of Dad standing static with Junior and Jane … Continue reading

Father’s Day Memory Shirt

Every year, my kids make their Dad a T-shirt. We take a new white T-shirt (although one year the kids insisted on green) and some fabric paint. Each child dips a hand in one color of paint and then “stamps” the hand print on to the shirt. Then, their names are added next to their prints with a fabric marker. Finally, the date is added. We have been making these shirts since my oldest of three was an infant of just a few days old. He was born the day before Father’s Day, so the present was a little late. … Continue reading

Another Study Finds Children of Older Fathers at Increased Risk of Autism

A new study shows that older fathers are more likely to transmit new DNA variations to their children than younger fathers are. The researchers report that this means that older fathers have a higher risk of having children who have an autism spectrum disorder. There have been several different studies that result in data that indicates that older fathers have a higher chance of having children who have autism than fathers who are younger do. Previous to these studies, it was presumed that the age of the mother was the significant factor in determining the risk of having a child … Continue reading

Father’s Day Reflections

I am so grateful for Father’s Day to celebrate both my own father and my husband. I have been so blessed to see good men in my life that set an example of how to be a good Dad, but also how to support a family no matter how hard it is. Father’s day didn’t turn out quite like we planned. I wanted to get up and make my hubby breakfast with the kids. But, instead, I was sick with a cold. I managed to occupy the kids with a craft for their Dad, though and give him a little … Continue reading

Happy Father’s Day Mom

Today was Father’s Day. I spent the day having a BBQ with some friends, none of our children were in attendance. We are single mothers, this is not our day. Yet for many of us, it still is. Getting your child for a day or two a month is not what it takes to be a father. Sending a child support check but not coming to their choir performance, is not what makes a father. Just like being a mother, being a father is made up of a million little things, most that we do without thinking. My daughter has … Continue reading
