Even More Midwest Fests

It’s that time of year again… festival season in the Midwest. From the world’s largest food festival, the Taste of Chicago in the Windy City to the world’s largest music festival, Summerfest, in Milwaukee. Tis the season to be festing (or feasting). The following are a few more family friendly festivals taking place in Illinois and Wisconsin this summer. ILLNOIS Kicks For Kids. Chicago’s Grant Park will be turned into an enormous kick ball field so elementary school-age children can show off their skills. Proceeds benefit children battling life-threatening illnesses. A Taste of Japan

For some, a trip to Hawaii is merely a pit stop on the way to other destinations. For example, if you are flying from California to Japan, spending a few days exploring the 50th State is not unusual. However, if Hawaii is your final destination, but you long to continue on to Japan, I may have the perfect solution: attend a Japanese Cultural Festival in Hawaii. While most people regard Hawaii as the ideal location for sand, surf and spectacular sunsets, I’m here to tell you that the island paradise is also a prime spot for sashimi, sushi and shave … Continue reading

Hot Hawaiian Festivals

My neighbors leave for Hawaii tomorrow. I am so jealous. They will be visiting Oahu and the Big Island of Hawaii. Initially, they were planning their trip for August, but they found a great deal on-line and changed their travel dates to take advantage of it. Knowing that I grew up in Hawaii, they asked me to put a list together of local cultural events that I would recommend they attend. Seems like you just can’t escape “it.” “It” is the insanely high price of gas and nowadays, it’s the topic of conversation wherever you go. Ironically, it was a topic brought up last weekend during a mini-road trip my family took to attend a local Kite Festival. Ironic, because like many families, the skyrocketing price of gas has forced us to eliminate our “big” summer road trip. Instead, we have opted to save gas (and money) by attending a variety of area festivals that … Continue reading

Strawberry Festivals (Expect the Unexpected)

Currently, they are the star attraction at area markets. You’ve probably seen the signs at your own grocery store: “2 for $4” or “Buy One Quart Get One Free.” Or perhaps, you love them so much you have ventured out to the fields to pick your own. I’m talking about strawberries. The red delicious, and oh-so-versatile fruit is in season and ready to be devoured in cakes, pies, and ice cream. Try them sliced into a salad, on top of breakfast cereal or pancakes, dusted with confectioners’ sugar or dipped in chocolate… it’s easy to do at a local Strawberry … Continue reading
