Celebrity Proposal on Ice

Did you see it? If you were watching the U.S. Figure Skating Championships this weekend you likely witnessed one of the romantic moves ever performed on ice. I guess pairs figure skater John Baldwin couldn’t wait for Valentine’s Day. It’s a moment that is now frozen in time for many spectators—-especially the expression on Rena Inoue’s face when her skating partner of seven years got down on one knee in the middle of the ice and proposed to her. Baldwin asked Inoue for her hand in marriage just moments after the pair completed their silver-medal-winning performance Saturday in St. Paul, … Continue reading

Ice Castles (1978)

Every so often when I blog about a movie, I get so wrapped up in the emotions I felt while watching the film that I just have to sit and sniffle for a minute before I can write. I loved “Ice Castles” to the point of silliness, and so pardon me a moment while I sit and sniffle. Thank you; I believe I can now go forth. I’ve mentioned how much I love figure skating and how much I love romantic movies. This one just hit the spot in so many ways. She is saved just in time by … Continue reading

My Sergei – Ekaterina Gordeeva

Ekaterina Gordeeva and Sergei Grinkov were the pair skaters to beat in the late 1980’s and the 1990’s. They came from Russia and had been skating together for years, placed together by chance in the beginning but falling in love the more they came to know each other. Theirs was a love story unequaled in the world of sports. Watching them skate together was like watching two people realizing they’re in love for the first time – every look, every touch as gentle and sweet as could be. Their technique was flawless, their execution perfect, their love pure and beautiful. … Continue reading

Olympic Figure Skating Champion Gets New Job Representing America

Five-time world figure skating champion Michelle Kwan is taking on a new role representing the United States, and it has nothing to do with skating; rather Kwan will represent America as the country’s first public diplomacy envoy. Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice made the announcement at a State Department press briefing yesterday. “Michelle embodies the American dream,” Rice said of the nine-time U.S. figure skating titleholder. “The daughter of Chinese immigrants, she rose to the heights of artistic and athletic excellence through her discipline, her drive and her determination.” In her traditional humble manner, Kwan said she hopes that by … Continue reading
