Sundance in Full Bloom

Believe it or not, there are other events going on in the world other than Barack Obama’s inauguration today. For example, the famed Sundance Film Festival is currently going on in Park City, Utah and those stars that aren’t in Washington, D.C. are surely there hobnobbing with each other. This year, rock documentaries are big with Tom DiCillo’s When You’re Strange. When You’re Strange contains footage of Doors frontman Jim Morrison and keyboardist Ray Manzarek that was shot by a UCLA film school buddy between 1966 and 1971. DiCillo wanted to do a Doors film because he himself is a … Continue reading

Kate and Leopold (2001)

Leopold, Duke of Albany (Hugh Jackman) is a man of science and learning. He’s always thinking about ways to improve life around him, including a marvelous invention shaped like a closet that will take people to a different floor than the one they’re on. He’s the toast of the town and definitely the catch of the nineteenth century. He needs to marry a wealthy young woman in order to supply the funds he needs to maintain his title. His uncle is throwing him a ball at which he will meet several ladies and there make up his mind. While dancing … Continue reading

Long Movies—Love Them Or Leave Them?

Quite honestly I can’t remember the last time I paid money to see a movie (in a theater) that wasn’t animated. My two-year-old daughter is the official movie selector in our home and frankly, I have no complaints about her choices. I have always had a hard time sitting through long movies. I get antsy. Seriously, I fidget so much it becomes annoying to the person seated next to me. Which is why kid-friendly animated films–that last about 80 minutes–are perfect for me. Recently, I learned that I might not be the only one who struggles to sit through long … Continue reading

Blockbuster vs. Netflix

Ever since Jaime Egan posted her blog about renting DVDs online, I’ve been curious to give it a try. I didn’t do it right away because we were in the midst of selling the home we were living in and I didn’t want the hassle of changing addresses and what have you, so I put it off and frankly forgot about it. But about two weeks ago, within days of each other, I received flyers in the mail from both Blockbuster and Netflix. “Ah!” I said to myself, in the same tone of voice one would use to say, “Eureka!,” … Continue reading

He earned his first Academy Award nomination for the … Continue reading

A Place To Watch Hollywood Stars Under the Stars

It’s a movie theater where crying babies are welcome and fellow movie buffs won’t be bothered if you talk during the entire film. It’s hard to believe such a place exists (outside your living room), but they do and for some of us they are only a car drive away. They are drive-in movie theaters and they are slowly making a comeback in the United States. Drive-in theaters were all the rage back in the 1950s, when there were more than 4,000 outdoor theaters across the country. Compare that to today when the national total sits at just 420. Given … Continue reading

Trouble on the Set for Lindsay Lohan

I am pretty tired of seeing Lindsay Lohan in the tabloids. Lindsay is having a fight with Paris, Lindsay is falling down the stairs at Bryan Adam’s London home, Lindsay is back with on-again off-again boyfriend Wilmer Valderrama, Lindsay is anorexic. It seems no matter what she does, the tabloids have something to say about it. They especially seem to enjoy writing about bad behavior – Lindsay ignored a fan’s request for an autograph, she was underage drinking at a bar, she partied late into the night and missed a day of filming. Much of it may just be fodder … Continue reading
