Another Time for Letting Go

I’m having mixed feelings about Regina starting kindergarten this week. Part of me wants to cry out that I haven’t had enough time with her– I should get an extra eight months! (Someone did once ask me Meg’s age when she was two and a half years old, and I responded “a year and a half” because that’s how long she’d been with me!) If Regina were a summer birthday I would definitely hold off on school, but she’s almost six. (And she has been wearing her sister’s outgrown uniforms since April.) I do sometimes feel a bit jealous about … Continue reading

What Will Mommy Do When I’m at School? – Dolores Johnson

For many districts, school starts next week. There are countless children’s picture books available to help your child deal with the anxiety they may go through as they face their first day. I list just some at the end of this blog, but right now I’d like to introduce you to “What Will Mommy Do When I’m at School?” by Dolores Johnson. Our main character is a little girl who is heading off to school tomorrow. She’s worried about her mother, because she’s never left her alone for a whole day before. School Starts When???

Wow! I don’t know when school starts in your area but around here, it’s only about three weeks away! Where did the summer go? I usually have most of the school supplies purchased and neatly stored away, shoes for each of the kids, and at least half of the school clothes bought by now. I’ve usually already made hair appointments too. Right now, I’ve got nothing. I cannot believe I am so far behind. Each year I seem to get less organized instead of more. I just checked my school supply shelf and there are three report folders, two glue … Continue reading

The First Day of School

Does your family have a tradition for the first day of school? We do. Since our kids regularly ride the bus, we always drive them to school the first day. It’s a family affair and we all walk the kids to class, starting with the youngest. Well, it’s changed a little now. With one currently in middle school and one in high school, we basically get to walk them to the front door of the building and say goodbye. Oh, how I remember holding their hands and taking them to their classes. It doesn’t seem so long ago. I was … Continue reading

Today’s the Day – School Fits and Starts

Today, in my area, school officially starts. I don’t know who has worse butterflies – myself or my daughter. She woke up at 2:30 this morning and couldn’t sleep. She came in to snuggle with me and she talked about all the things she’s afraid of and nervous about. She’s worried that her teacher won’t like her or that worse, she’s going to be afraid when I leave. I understand that fear. We all experience that fear whenever we’re ready to take on a new challenge. Without a doubt, starting Kindergarten is starting a new challenge in life. This morning … Continue reading
