The All-or-Nothing Person

I don’t know if you can relate to this, but I tend to be an all-or-nothing kind of person.  Although this can be a good trait, for the most part it stands in the way.  This is especially true with fitness.  Thankfully I am learning to overcome this mentality. Here is what the all-or-nothing person looks like.  You intend to start up an exercise program on Monday.  But something happens and your schedule for the day gets screwed up. The all-or-nothing person’s response isn’t “I will just start on Tuesday.”  No, they decide to wait until the following Monday. Here … Continue reading

Bad Habits

Bad habits…we all have them.  But bad habits in fitness can make losing weight difficult. The problem with habits is that they are difficult to break.  So a new way to approach this is to look at it as not having to break habits but developing new ones.  It sounds more positive, doesn’t it? Let’s start with some bad habits when it comes to food.  How many times does your family get fast food?  It’s gotten so bad that eating out once-a-week is looked at as healthy.  One of my goals for the New Year is going to be cutting … Continue reading

Get Up and Get Moving

In the world of fitness and health, there is a lot of talk about the need to remain physically active.  So you might think that as long as you’re getting in half an hour of exercise everyday, physical activity levels are being met. Not so fast.  There may be more to it than this.  In fact, a new study looks at women in particular and finds that despite exercising; too much sitting doesn’t reduce the risk of certain health conditions.  In other words, you are no better off in lowering the chance of diabetes, premature death, obesity and cardiovascular diseases. … Continue reading

Fitness Is Good for Your Health

While many of us look at fitness as a way to lose weight or tone up, we cannot underestimate another benefit to it. Fitness is good for your health. The reason I think this is important to focus on is because there are many out there who have tried fitness and for whatever reason, it hasn’t led to significant weight loss. Sometimes it is a matter of metabolism, your age or if you are a woman, going through a hormonal stage such as menopause. There are times, particularly once you get older, that losing weight becomes difficult no matter how … Continue reading

Fitness for Your Emotions

It might be the last thing you think about when you are feeling down but did you know that exercise can put you in a better mood? Think about what you typically do when you are feeling down. Many of us probably turn to food, sit in front of the television or do some other mindless activity. We do these things because they seem to have a numbing affect on us. What happens after you have eaten that whole bag of chips or wasted hours in front of the television? Do you feel any better? No. In fact, you usually … Continue reading

Pets, Fitness and Depression

If you struggle with depression and are also concerned about losing weight or simply exercising more, consider an unconventional remedy: getting a new pet. Studies have consistently shown that regular exposure to the companionship of animals can relieve stress, improve moods, and generally contribute to mental well-being in humans. In short, pets are good for us, whether we deal with depression or not. It may seem counterintuitive – is it wise to take on the responsibility of a pet when simply getting through a normal day can be difficult? The idea is that the change itself, the new responsibility, will … Continue reading
